CEDAR CITY — A 7-year-old boy suffered serious injuries Monday after being hit by an SUV in Cedar City.

The boy was riding a scooter in a parking area in the 1100 North block of North Field Road around 8:20 a.m., when Cedar City police said a woman driving an SUV was backing out of a parking space and hit the child.

"The child sustained significant injuries, including head trauma, and was pinned under the vehicle," Cedar City Police Sgt. Kirk Lovell said. The boy was extricated from under the vehicle, and first responders started rendering life-saving measures, including CPR.

He was taken to Cedar City Hospital, then flown to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City for additional treatment.

Monday's incident marks at least the third similar occurrence in the past week.

On Wednesday in West Jordan, a 12-year-old boy was hit by an SUV while on a scooter. Rockwell Gundersen's family told KSL the crash has left him hospitalized and dealing with major trauma to his brain.

On Sunday in Ogden, a 14-year-old boy was also hit while on a mini motorcycle.

Cedar City police reminded drivers to be extra cautious while traveling in the areas where children may be present, especially during morning and afternoon hours when kids are going to and from school.

"Drivers are urged to remain alert and to carefully check their surroundings when backing out of parking spaces or driveways," Lovell said.
