WEST VALLEY CITY — A driver with a history of fleeing from police was taken into custody Monday after officers say he ran two red lights on Bangerter Highway, hit another vehicle and then got out and ran from officers.

Nickolas Cayden Brundle, 23, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of 10 charges, including failing to stop for police, interfering with an officer, reckless driving, speeding, driving on a revoked license and not having an interlock device in the car.

The string of events started at about 11 a.m. at 3500 South on Bangerter Highway. A West Valley police officer saw a car run a red light and attempted to pull the driver over. The officer estimated the Honda Civic was going 73 mph in a 55-mph zone, a police booking affidavit states.

"The suspect instead turned around at 3100 South and headed south," said West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.

The officer followed with his emergency lights and siren on, but Brundle did not pull over.

"After it was clear that the vehicle was not going to stop due to their speed, I turned off my emergency equipment and notified over the radio that the vehicle was fleeing. While doing so, the vehicle ran the red light going south on Bangerter at 3500 South, where the vehicle collided with another vehicle and spun out of control," the officer wrote in the affidavit.

Brundle then got out of the car and ran.

"I chased (him) across Bangerter, into a parking lot and then back onto Bangerter where (Brundle) was taken to the ground and later placed in handcuffs," the affidavit states. "A records check of (Brundle) and the black Civic showed that the vehicle had no insurance and that (he) had a revoked license due to an alcohol offense and an ignition interlock restriction on his license."

One officer suffered an injury not considered to be life-threatening during the arrest, Vainuku said. The driver of the other vehicle that was broadsided was not injured. Brundle was checked at a local hospital before being taken to jail.

Bangerter Highway was briefly closed at 3500 South as emergency crews responded to the crash, according to the Utah Department of Transportation. All lanes were open again by noon.

According to court records, Brundle is already facing a DUI and drug distribution charge filed in September in 3rd District Court and accused of driving while intoxicated and police also found "a large bag of marijuana on the passenger seat," according to charging documents. He also has a trial scheduled for later this year in another case in which he is charged with failing to stop for police.

Brundle was convicted in another case of failing to stop for police in 2024 and sentenced to probation, according to court records.
