SALT LAKE CITY — After a 31-year-old man was struck by a car in Salt Lake City early Saturday, police say private security guards followed the driver and detained them for police.

Initial information suggests someone driving a black Audi hit the man, possibly as the man was starting to cross the street at 700 South and 600 West, according to a press release from Salt Lake City police department.

Paramedics took the man to the hospital in serious but stable condition, according to the release.

"The person driving the suspect car, a black Audi, did not stop," the release says. A Utah Highway Patrol trooper was in the area and tried to stop the driver, but the driver escaped.

Salt Lake City police say private security guards may have seen what happened and followed the car while calling UHP, ultimately stopping near 1820 West 465 North. The release says the suspect and security guards got into an argument, and the guards detained the alleged driver until police arrived.

Investigators are looking into the possibility of the Audi "street racing before or during the crash," according to the release, and have determined the driver to be impaired.

No further identifying information was released about the person arrested or the victim.
