SALT LAKE CITY — A number of multi-vehicle crashes along I-15 forced major delays for drivers across the Wasatch Front on Saturday.
A crash at around 10:45 a.m. forced the closure of all northbound lanes of I-15 in Spanish Fork, according to the Utah Department of Transportation, but crews were able to get traffic flowing again in around 30 minutes.
Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Luis Silva said the crash involved 14 cars, and one driver was transported to a hospital in stable condition.
That closure occurred an hour after officials were able to reopen the interstate in Draper. I-15 was closed to northbound traffic at 14600 South for a couple of hours Saturday morning due to a crash involving 10 vehicles, Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Luis Silva said.
It happened shortly after 9 a.m. and by 9:30 a.m., UDOT traffic cameras showed traffic stopped by Utah Highway Patrol vehicles as multiple crashes along the interstate blocked lanes. One driver was transported to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to Silva.
The northbound lanes were reopened by 11:15 a.m., according to UDOT.
The UDOT traffic website also showed a crash just north of the Bangerter Highway exit, and a larger one blocking the right four lanes and shoulder near 7200 South. With widespread snow on the road and continuing lake-effect snowfall, many of these accidents are likely due to weather.
Big Cottonwood Canyon was closed at around 9 a.m. but reopened later in the morning. UDOT warned skiers driving up the canyons that road conditions are "very slick."
