ROY — Two people are dead after a fire trapped them in their mobile home Thursday in Roy.
The fire was reported around noon at the Monte Vista Mobile Home Park, 3800 S. 1900 West. By the time police arrived, flames were shooting more than 20 feet in the air.
Roy police officers were first on scene and tried to break the windows to get inside. The flames and smoke were too intense, however, and two police officers ended up going to the hospital with cuts from the glass.
Roy City Fire and Rescue Chief Theron Williams said the mobile home burned very quickly, forcing firefighters to fight defensively before getting to the two people inside.
Williams said mobile homes burn quickly due to their construction. The two people who lived in the home got trapped by the flames in one of the back bedrooms.
By the time firefighters could get inside, the man and woman who were trapped were unconscious and not breathing, police said. The pair were taken to the hospital where they died.

Neighbors told KSL-TV the two people who lived at the home were a woman and her adult son.
Scott and Sylvia Wayment live across the street from the home and said the woman who died was "as sweet as they come." The couple knew the woman well and spent time with her baking and crocheting together.
Investigators say cigarettes possibility sparked the fire, but the official cause is still unknown.
