GUNNISON — A 16-year-old girl died after falling near Gunnison on Saturday, according to the Sanpete County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said they received reports of an "accident" in the White Hills area near Gunnison about 1:10 p.m. on Saturday, according to a news release. Emergency responders arrived to find the girl "had fallen off a steep embankment." She was taken to Primary Children's Hospital where she died from her injuries, deputies said.

The girl was identified in a post on social media by the North Sanpete School District, and the sheriff's office confirmed to KSL.com it was referring to the same incident.

"It is with deep regret that we inform you about a recent loss to our school community," the school district located in Mt. Pleasant said in its Facebook post. "Brinley Bailey, one of our 11th-grade students, has passed away from injuries sustained in a tragic accident over the weekend. Our thoughts and sympathies are with family and friends."

"The Sanpete County Sheriff's Office would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family," the news release says.

More information about the incident was not immediately available.
