SPRINGVILLE — The Utah County Sheriff's Office is investigating after human remains were found in a canyon near Springville on Saturday.

A rock climber reported finding human remains in an area commonly known as Springville Rock Canyon, which is one canyon north of the lime kiln, the sheriff's office said. The man was climbing in steep terrain above the northeast part of Springville when he discovered the remains.

Investigators responded to the area and found "skeletonized human remains" that were later confirmed by the state medical examiner as human.

The sheriff's office said no local law enforcement agencies have any missing persons cases that they believe could be connected to the remains.

"Additional efforts to collect evidence are being made, but very little is known about the remains that were found. Also, evidence in the area suggests there may be a reason people like to go there for recreation or fun," the sheriff's office said in a statement Tuesday.

The remains do not appear to be recent, but also do not appear to be historic, the sheriff's office said.

Police encourage anyone with information that could help identify the person to call 801-851-4010 and ask to speak to detective Fuell.
