SALT LAKE CITY â Cam Rising had Rice-Eccles rolling in excitement Saturday afternoon.
The starting quarterback led No. 11 Utah to a big lead as the team looked to pull away early from the visiting Baylor Bears.
But late in the first half, Rising rolled out of the pocket to extend a play and was forced out of bounds and into Baylor equipment on the sidelines. Rising immediately grabbed his throwing hand after the play.
The training staff quickly made their way to Rising and took him to the medical tent before he eventually left to the locker room ahead of the halftime break, where he got an X-ray on his throwing hand.
Rising was later on the sidelines in street clothes, with his two middle fingers taped up.
Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said he couldn't give an exact answer on his availability moving forward, but was told "it's not real serious."
"It wasn't real serious, and I can't tell you the exact description of what happened," Whittingham said. "But he may be back this week. We'll see."
Utah will travel to Logan next week to closeout its nonconference slate.
In Rising's absence, Utah turned to freshman quarterback Isaac Wilson for the second week in a row. The former Corner Canyon quarterback "looked much more comfortable, much more in charge today," Whittingham said, but struggled at times to get the offense moving down field.
Whittingham said he was encouraged by what he saw in Wilson's second career game at the collegiate level, especially in that Wilson did not commit a turnover and managed to lead the offense on a time-sucking drive late in the game.
"If he is going to be our quarterback (next week), he's got an outstanding ability to run the football, as well, so we have to look at maximizing that," Whittingham said. "But for him, it's just reps. He just needs to accrue reps. He's getting all the two reps in practice. He is taking steps forward, and he is our guy, he's the No. 2 guy.
Wilson said he felt more "composed" this week, but felt there was more he could do to help the offense (and defense).
"I've got to be there for my teammates, especially," Wilson said. "I mean, there's a lot of plays I could have had back, and we're gonna go into the film room, we're gonna evaluate that. But just going through the motions, getting completions, moving the ball down the field.
"I think I could have helped the defense, personally, by getting the ball moving just a little bit more, so then not put so much pressure on them. But come next week, I've got to be ready."
It remains to be seen if Wilson will get the start next Saturday, but Wilson said he'll be ready if that time comes.
