SALT LAKE CITY — There were 100 homicides in Utah during 2024, according to statistics compiled annually by KSL.com. Nearly 70% of the victims were shot to death.
Here is a look at each of the Utah homicide victims and how they were killed in 2024.
1.HELPER, Jan. 1 — Karon Louise Barker-Griffin, 64, was shot in the head in her bedroom at 40 Garden Street. Her son, Matthew Frank Juliano, 39, was arrested after calling 911 several times and stating "an accident had happened," according to police. Officers say Juliano was "behaving erratically" when they arrived and wouldn't answer direct questions. Juliano is charged with murder and trial is set to begin Jan. 27. 2.SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 3 — David Hinkebein, 65, was found badly beaten inside A Place for Your Stuff, 502 W. 300 South, a building that offers free storage for people experiencing homelessness. Hinkebein was the manager of the warehouse. Police say he was brutally beaten with a hammer and may have been dead since Dec. 29, but his body wasn't discovered until Jan. 3, which is the day prosecutors have listed in court documents that the offense was committed. Nathan David Evans, 41, who police say is homeless, is charged with murder. Witnesses say Evans and Hinkebein were last seen working at the facility on the night of Dec. 29. An autopsy found "at least 15 sharp/blunt force injuries to the head consistent with a hammer" in addition to "at least three sharp force injuries to the neck/throat" that were determined to have occurred after Hinkebein was already dead. 3.MIDVALE, Jan. 4 — Yuping Jiao, 45, an employee at A+ Massage, was stabbed 56 times all over her body, including her back, neck, shoulder, arms, knee and head. Steven Chance Brinkerhoff, 39, of Redondo Beach, who police say has an extensive criminal history, was arrested in California using DNA evidence and later charged in Utah with murder. 4.PROVO, Jan. 6 — Corry Don Fausett, 55, was shot three times in the head and once in the side. Fausett's wife, Melissa Johnson-Fausett, 56, told police she shot her husband after he attacked her, grabbing her by the neck and hitting her in the head. She was charged with murder after her version of events was not supported by evidence, charges say. No injuries were found on the woman, a different gun than what police were presented with had human blood on it, and burn marks on the man's face indicated "a close-range shot," according to police. 5.SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 14 — Gabriel Mash Isidore Vigil, 18, was shot twice and killed by "friendly fire" while police say he and his friends were shooting at others at a party. Maricio Amar Reyes Valdez, 19, and Isidore Junior Barrera, 20, of Kearns, are charged with aggravated robbery, two counts of shooting someone causing serious injury, and 18 counts of discharge of a firearm. Tommi Tiaria Jude Gallegos, 23, of West Valley City, is charged with obstruction of justice. Police say a 16-year-old boy was also arrested. The group had gone to a party near 800 South and 300 East with plans of beating up and carjacking someone over a gang-related dispute, according to police. Investigators believe the four men — including Vigil — fired at least 18 rounds. But Vigil "was hit by friendly fire," and died after being shot twice. 6.RIVERDALE, Jan. 14 — William Marvin Toon, 28, of Highland, was shot and killed by police during a confrontation in a gas station convenience store. Toon was wanted for attempted murder in a stabbing with scissors in Pleasant Grove. Surveillance video shows three Ogden officers and one from Pleasant Grove police attempting to arrest Toon with their guns drawn. "He's going to take a hostage!" an officer is heard yelling as Toon started to move behind the counter where two employees were trying to hide. The four officers fired 24 rounds, striking Toon 17 times. The shooting was determined to be legally justified by the Weber County Attorney's Office. Method: Shooting Motive: Justified defense
7.RIVERDALE, Jan. 14 — 2-month-old Calvin Chacone died of a skull fracture and brain bleed. The infant's mother, Bryce Jo Harkins, told police she punched her son in the head when he would not stop crying. She admitted to abusing her son in the past by backhanding him as hard as the fatal punch, throwing him into his crib and pushing on his chest. Harkins pleaded guilty to murder and is set to be sentenced Jan. 24. Method: Abuse Motive: Child abuse, domestic
8.MILLCREEK, Jan. 20 — Esperanza Chavez, 25, was shot in the head twice at close range, and her body was left next to a dumpster. Chavez, known by friends and family as "Espie," was days away from moving out of state to escape her violent ex-boyfriend Frederick Jason Edwards, her mother said. Edwards, 46, is accused of abducting Chavez from her aunt's house and attempting to put her body in a dumpster about 20 minutes later near 3994 S. 300 West before leaving her on the ground, according to police. 9.KEARNS, Jan. 21 — Lennyn Lilic, 5, died a week after her car was hit by an impaired driver. Lennyn's father and brother were also seriously injured. Charmayne Huerta-Guzman, 25, is accused of passing another vehicle in a no-passing zone while going 77 mph in a 35 mph zone on a spare "donut" tire. Police say her blood-alcohol level was almost five times the legal limit. Guzman, who was allegedly driving on a denied license and no insurance, is charged with murder. 10.SPRINGVILLE, Jan. 31 — "Baby Rhoades," an 18-month-old girl, died after ingesting a lethal amount of methadone. Springville police have refused to release the young victim's name. The girl's mother, Kaylee Michelle Rhoades, 27, took a two-hour nap after going to the methadone clinic with her daughter and woke up to find the child limp and unresponsive. Rhoades pleaded no contest to manslaughter. Her live-in boyfriend Nicholas Wade Boyd, 31, pleaded guilty to child endangerment. Police found "a plethora of drug paraphernalia … throughout the apartment, within easy access to a child. The amount of drug paraphernalia present was evident of drug culture and drug use in the home," according to police. Rhoades was sentenced to one to 15 years in prison. 11.SANDY, Feb. 12 — Tony Dejolie, 31, was shot and killed outside a Sandy duplex near 635 E. 7800 South. Victor Ray Garcia, in his 20s, was also shot and injured. However, Garcia was not arrested and the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office declined to file charges, citing self-defense. Method: Shooting Motive: Self-defense
12.TOOELE, Feb. 16 — James Greene, 32, was found in his bedroom with a gunshot wound to his head and "lacerations to his head, face, hands and arms" that appeared to be "defensive wounds," according to police. He died at a hospital the next day. Greene's 9-year-old son was arrested and accused of shooting his father. Investigators also found "a tomahawk-style hatchet" covered in blood and believe Greene suffered "tomahawk strikes." Because of the boy's age and the sensitive nature of the case, no information about what happened to the boy after he was taken into custody has been released. 13.WEST VALLEY CITY, Feb. 22 — Dariana Elizabet Gonzalez Samano, 3 months, died at Primary Children's Hospital after allegedly being punched by her father. Israel Levi Gonzalez Gomez, 21, is charged with murder or in the alternative child abuse homicide, after investigators found he was alone with the baby and hit the baby's face because he was "desperate for a way to calm the baby down from her excessive crying," according to charging documents. The girl's mother, 20-year-old Andrea Samano Galeana, was charged with obstruction of justice. Method: Abuse Alleged motive: Child abuse, domestic
14, 15.BLANDING, Feb. 25 — Christopher "Topher" Owens, 28, and William "Drew" Bull, 29, disappeared while driving from Moab to their home in Blanding on Feb. 25. They were reported as missing on March 1 to the San Juan County Sheriff's Office. Their bodies were found about three weeks later in Arizona with gunshot wounds. Their landlord, 35-year-old Charles Youngjuom Yoo, was charged with two counts of aggravated murder. Investigators reported finding human blood in areas of Yoo's home, burnt remnants of possible clothing and carpet buried under the building, and location data from Yoo's cellphone allegedly showed him in the area of the location where the bodies were found. 16.BOUNTIFUL, Feb. 29 — Uatisone "Junior" Kelemete, 20, of West Bountiful was shot during a drug deal. Police say Darius Jay Farr, 20, was selling 50 THC vape cartridges to Kelemete. Kelemete walked up to Farr's car window and asked Farr to put his gun on the floorboard while they made the transaction. Farr, however, claimed Kelemete moved toward the car with a gun, so Farr "grabbed his gun … and in one motion racked the gun and fired at Kelemete as Kelemete fired a gun at him," charges state. Farr, who was shot in the hand and leg, was charged with murder but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter and was sentenced to one to 15 years in prison. Method: Shooting Motive: Drugs
17.SOUTH SALT LAKE, March 1 — Ezzaldeen Hussein, 17, was shot and killed in the living room of his friend's home following an argument. Hussein had gone to 18-year-old Anthony Raymond Woodrow Jr.'s house, 457 Woodland Ave., to confront him about a text argument that happened earlier in the day, charges say. He was met at the door by Woodrow and his father, Anthony Raymond Woodrow, 47, both armed with guns. The situation calmed down and Hussein was allowed inside. But when the teen was trying to leave, the situation escalated and Woodrow Jr. shot his friend "five to six times," police say. Woodrow Jr. is charged with murder. His father is charged with obstruction of justice. A justification hearing to determine if Woodrow Jr. acted in self-defense is scheduled for March. Method: Shooting Alleged motive: Argument
18.SALT LAKE CITY, March 3 — Hay Ly, 61, was shot inside Varex Imaging, 1678 S. Pioneer Road, by 56-year-old Miller Bin, who then shot and killed himself in the parking lot in a murder-suicide. Both men were employees of the company, according to investigators, but no motive has been determined. Method: Shooting Motive: Unknown
19.MURRAY, March 5 — Josue David Magadan, 17, died after being shot in the back of the head by a friend while the two were "play fighting," according to police. Magadan was sitting in the driver's seat of a Chevy Tahoe outside a McDonald's, 4452 S. Commerce Drive, when his friend, Jhon Alvaro Alarcon Paredes, 20, began "play fighting" and pointed a gun to the back of Magadan's head, racked it and threatened to shoot and kill him several times, charges say. The gun then went off, striking Magadan. Paredes fled and was arrested in Fruita, Colorado. He is charged with murder and claimed Josue pulled a knife on him. 20.RIVERTON, March 8 — Joshua Mel-Scott Watson, 40, was shot by police following a slow-speed chase across the Salt Lake Valley. About 45 minutes after first spotting a Chevy Tahoe suspected in a series of vehicle burglaries, officers from Sandy, Herriman and Riverton were able to successfully spike two of the vehicle's tires on Redwood Road north of Camp Williams. A third tire was spiked minutes later near 14600 S. Redwood. Watson continued driving toward his home near 13800 South and 2105 West. In front of his home, Watson pointed a gun at his head while remaining in his vehicle, and then pointed the gun at officers and was shot. Sandy police officer Sean Ten Eyck, Riverton police officer Damien Olson and Herriman police officer Jennifer Fairbanks fired a total of 15 rounds. An autopsy determined Watson was shot or grazed by gunshots six times. A "Glock 17 replica BB gun" was recovered from Watson's vehicle. The three officers were determined to be legally justified. 21.TAYLORSVILLE, March 17 — Alexzia "Alex" Franco, 21, got into a Jeep with three teen boys near 3800 West and 5700 South, close to his home, to buy a gun, according to police, when witnesses heard a shot and the Jeep sped away. Franco's body was found two days later in a remote desert area of Utah County. Rohan Sharoon and Pedro Alexis Romero-Bustos, both 17, are charged as adults with murder. The third boy, who was 15 at the time of the shooting, is charged in juvenile court with murder. Police believe the three intended to rob Franco of the money he was using to buy the gun when an altercation happened. Method: Shooting Alleged motive: Robbery
22.WEST JORDAN, March 26 — Dylan Douglas Miller-Mettome, 27, was shot in the chest by his friend who claimed he was trying to "be funny." Anthony Sanchez, 30, told police he and Miller-Mettome were watching TV when "Anthony did something funny enough that prompted Dylan to take his phone out and start recording." Sanchez said that he pulled his gun out to be funny, not knowing it was loaded. Sanchez pointed the loaded firearm Miller-Mettome and shot him in the chest, charges say. He told police there had been no fight or argument. Sanchez is charged with manslaughter. Method: Shooting Alleged motive: Recklessness
23.SALT LAKE CITY, April 2 — Cameron Ammon Cloward, 35, was shot and killed by Salt Lake police after refusing to put his knife down. Police were called to Charlie's Market, 875 S. State, on a report of a man with a knife. Despite being told multiple times to drop his weapon — one officer is even heard on body camera video saying "Please don't make us do this" — Cloward responds by saying "No" and "I don't care" and advances toward the officers. Morgan Cloward said his brother was diagnosed as autistic and suffered from schizophrenia and believes he "didn't have to die." Four officers were placed on paid administrative leave. The district attorney will determine if the shooting was legally justified. Method: Shooting Motive: Possible justified defense
24.CEDAR CITY, April 20 — Kylee Dittrich-Gray, 31, was found dead of a fentanyl overdose. John Parry, 39, and his wife Kimberly Dawn Hare, 33, are each charged with manslaughter for allegedly supplying the drugs. After the woman's death, investigators received multiple tips stating that Hare "is a fentanyl dealer in Cedar City" and sold the drugs to the woman. The state manslaughter charges for Parry and Hare were later dismissed after federal charges were filed. Both pleaded guilty to distribution of fentanyl resulting in death. 25.WEST VALLEY CITY, April 26 — John Stirley Pulver, 72, was found dead in his home from blunt force trauma to his head, possibly from a hatchet. His son, Jeremy Ross Pulver, 46, is charged with his murder. Police said Pulver is "known for being a normal guy unless he was under the influence of drugs, then he was angry, aggressive and unpredictable." A caretaker for the elderly Pulver told investigators that the two were constantly arguing and Jeremy Pulver was aggressive. Method: Beating Alleged motive: Argument
26.SARATOGA SPRINGS, April 30 — Brooklyn Barrett, 21, was shot by her friend, Heavenly Faith Garfield, 22, as part of a suicide pact the two had made. But Garfield did not shoot herself. The two friends bonded over their shared mental health challenges. Both had written suicide notes. Garfield pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to one to 15 years in prison. 27.SANTAQUIN, May 5 — Billy Dean Hooser, 50, a Santaquin police sergeant, was killed after intentionally being hit by a semitruck, according to police. Hooser and a trooper had pulled over Michael Aaron Jayne, 42, after Jayne, who police say was high on meth, called 911 claiming that someone was riding on the back of the semitruck. During the stop, a woman jumped out of the cab and ran to the officers for help. As officers were preparing to take Jayne into custody, he drove off in the semi, made a sharp U-turn and drove directly at the two officers and the woman. Hooser was pinned against one of the police vehicles and killed on impact. Jayne was arrested later that day in Vernal following a chase. He is charged with capital murder, and prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty. Method: Assault with a vehicle Motive: Unknown
28.OREM, May 5 — Timothy Dastrup, 35, was killed during an argument police say began over food preparation. Dastrup's roommate at an Orem residential care facility, Brandon James Hooks, is charged with his murder. Hooks became angry when Dastrup put mayonnaise in the crab cake mix, then Hooks hit Dastrup multiple times and grabbed his neck, charges state. Employees of the facility tried to intervene and were able to separate the two, but by then Dastrup was not breathing. He died at the scene. A competency hearing is scheduled for Jan. 22. 29.SALT LAKE CITY, May 18 — Six-year-old Adlai Owen was shot and killed by his father, Samuel Bean Owen, 34, in their home at 31 W. Van Buren Ave. Samuel Owen, who had allegedly been struggling with his declining mental health in the weeks leading up to the shooting, then took his own life. The bodies were discovered after a family member requested that police conduct a welfare check. Adlai Owen and his father were the only people living in the home. 30.MILLCREEK, May 20 — Sifou Saimasina Sua, 47, was shot and killed by police while holding a gun to a 15-year-old girl. Unified police officer Austin Schmidt was determined to be legally justified in shooting Sua, with Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill calling his actions "heroic." The 15-year-old girl was dropped off at Sua's basement apartment by her mother, who is Sua's sister. The girl later contacted her mother to report Sua had a gun and was not answering the door, prompting the mother to ask police to conduct a welfare check. The girl told police Sua kept telling her he was going to shoot her. When police arrived, they decided to enter the apartment even though it appeared no one was inside. They found Sua armed and holding the girl. "Get out or I'm going to shoot her, too," he told the officers. Sua ignored multiple commands to drop his gun. Schmidt fired one round, striking Sua in the head. Method: Shooting Motive: Justified defense
31.SALT LAKE CITY, May 26 — Nico Christopher Patino, 30, was shot multiple times and killed in a parking lot outside a warehouse, 1810 W. Fortune Road, where a party was being held. Nay Blu Soe, 21, Abdihakim Abdullahi Mohamed, 19, and Nhial Mawut Buk, 19, were each charged with murder. Witnesses said Patino was in the parking lot when a car pulled up and words were exchanged. At that point, "as the victim was talking with the driver of the car, multiple coordinated shooters on foot and in the vehicle fired at the victim," according to police. Patino was shot seven times in the back and eight times in the front. Buk is the brother of Buk Mawut Buk, who was convicted of killing University of Utah football player Aaron Lowe in 2021. He is also the brother of Deng Mawut Buk, who is charged with murder along with two other men in the shooting death of a man outside a sneaker convention at the Salt Palace Convention Center in 2022. 32.SANDY, May 26 — Stephanie Lynne Haskett-Carrasco, 62, was found deceased under her bed with a head injury at the Medically Vulnerable People Program Facility, 8955 S. 255 West. Laura Darlene Northrup, 60, a roommate who witnesses say would often argue with Haskett-Carrasco, was charged with murder. Police found a 14-ounce can of protein powder under the bed that "appeared to be human blood and hair stuck to it." A mental competency review for Northrup is scheduled for Jan. 10. 33.SALT LAKE CITY, May 28 — Thomas Priest, 42, was shot at 3075 W. Decade Drive. David Delance Chase, 60, claimed Priest tried to attack him and fired four times when Priest rushed at him, according to police. He said he had met Priest two months earlier. On the day of the shooting, Priest had allegedly made threats accusing him of sleeping with his girlfriend. Chase claims he arrived at his trailer with Priest's girlfriend when Priest ran toward the truck. Chase made conflicting statements to investigators, saying at one point "he thought (Priest) might have something in his hand behind his back," while also saying Priest "didn't have a weapon, the victim's fists were closed." 34.HERRIMAN, May 29 — Nico Limongello, 16, was stabbed in the chest during a fight near 14901 S. Beckenbaur Ave. following Valley High School's graduation ceremony. Keith Tyree McClendon, 19, is charged with aggravated assault causing serious injury with a gang penalty enhancement. McClendon had an ongoing dispute with a 17-year-old boy with the initials E.D., according to police, and went to the graduation ceremony to look for him. McClendon recruited Limongello and two others to help him "hunt down" the teen. When the group found E.D., McClendon allegedly attacked him with brass knuckles causing serious injuries. At some point during the confrontation, however, Limongello got involved and was stabbed by E.D. Prosecutors declined to file charges against E.D. Method: Stabbing Motive: Self-defense
35.MURRAY, May 30 — Abdiaziz Abdirahman, 21, was hit multiple times during a drive-by-shooting near the Murray North TRAX Station and later died at a hospital. Raoul Bedoang, 17, was charged as an adult with murder and 18 other felony crimes. Four people, all members of the same gang, were wounded in the shooting, including a 14-year-old who charges say may be paralyzed. Eighteen shell casings were found at the scene. Police later identified all the victims as belonging to the same street gang, which has an ongoing dispute with another gang. Method: Shooting Alleged motive: Gangs
36.CLEARFIELD, June 3 — James Edward Saccato, 63, was shot following a road rage incident on state Route 193. Justin Kent Doman, 35, is charged with murder. Surveillance videos show both men traveling fast, with squealing tires and revving engines. Doman called 911 and gave a license plate number for Saccato's vehicle, admitting to hitting his car, but he continued to follow Saccato, charges say. When Saccato stopped in a residential area and approached Doman who was sitting in his car, a single shot was fired. Police say Doman was the aggressor and this was not a case of self-defense. A justification hearing was held in court in November, however, to determine whether Doman's actions were self-defense. A ruling has not been made. Method: Shooting Alleged motive: Road rage
37.LEHI, JUNE 3 — Michael Alden Brown, 38, of Eagle Mountain, was knocked out and died later that day at a hospital following a road rage confrontation. Brown and John Jeffrey Williams, 43, of Highland, were driving on Main Street in Lehi when witnesses reported Brown cutting off and brake checking Williams. Williams followed Brown into a neighborhood where both drivers stopped and got out of their vehicles and began fighting. Brown sustained a hard hit to the head and was knocked out. Both of Brown's sons were in the car at the time and saw their father get hit. Williams pleaded guilty to homicide by assault and impaired driving. He was sentenced to five years of probation. 38.SANDY, June 8 — Rebecca Siwale, 47, was shot multiple times inside her home by her husband, Stanley Siwale, 57, who police say then took his own life. Police said Stanley Siwale told their three children to leave during an argument, and moments later the children reported hearing "explosion-type sounds." Police said there were no previous reports of domestic violence involving the couple. The couple was originally from Zambia. Rebecca Siwale was the vice president and head of digital services at FLSmidth Inc. Stanley Siwale was previously a research assistant at Cleveland State University. 39.SOUTH JORDAN, June 15 — Marcelo Gutierrez, 31, was shot by South Jordan police after allegedly threatening officers with a knife. Police had responded to a report of a suspicious person looking into windows near Skye Park near 9800 South and 4800 West. When officers approached him he pulled out a knife. Police say they attempted to use less lethal methods at first, but were forced to shoot him when Gutierrez came toward officers with a knife. He died at a hospital from injuries. 40, 41.WASHINGTON, Washington County, June 18 — Joseph Bailey, 70, and Gail Bailey, 69, were shot multiple times in their home. Mia Bailey, 28, who legally changed her name and gender from Collin Troy Bailey, was arrested following an all-night search by police. When taken into custody, she allegedly told officers she went to her parents' home with the intent to kill them, that she did not have remorse for her actions, and stated "I would do it again." She is charged with two counts of aggravated murder, but prosecutors have said they will not seek the death penalty. Method: Shooting Motive: Unknown domestic
42.AMERICAN FORK, June 20 — Kerilyn Johnson, 52, was shot twice by her husband, Olin Johnson, 57, inside their home near 1400 North and 80 East, and he then turned the gun on himself. Officers said there were no signs of a struggle or argument before the murder-suicide. Kerilyn Johnson was a well-known vocal coach, singer and performer in the area. 43.WASHINGTON, Washington County, June 30 — Bransen Bryels-Nechanicky, 33, was shot three times shortly after arriving at his apartment, 20 N. Red Trail Lane, and discovered it was being burglarized. He and a woman noticed some of their belongings in a pile in the living room and then saw a man with a ski mask exit a bedroom. Police say Bryels-Ncehanicky charged at the intruder and was shot during a fight. Simeon Gail Calnimptewa, 17, of Washington, who lived in the same apartment complex, is charged as an adult with aggravated murder and other charges. Method: Shooting Alleged motive: Burglary
44.RIVERTON, July 4 — Ryan Patrick Ludeman, 23, of Pleasant Grove, was shot by police after allegedly becoming "noncompliant" during a field sobriety test. Riverton police originally responded to a report of a hit-and-run crash near 1300 West and 12800 South. The driver was located a short time later. But while officers were giving him a field sobriety test, he lunged at officers with a knife, according to police, and was shot. 45.WEST JORDAN, July 5 — Nicholas Bryce Kemp, 45, of West Jordan, was shot by police and later died after firing at officers investigating a report of domestic violence. West Jordan police were originally called to the area of 8700 South and 1300 West. Kemp shot at officers and fled and continued to shoot during a chase that ended near 9600 South and 1300 West with an exchange of gunfire. 46, 47.OGDEN, July 6 — Richard David Hendrickson, 57, and his daughter, Sally Isabelle Hendrickson, 16, were killed when an improperly secured bulldozer being hauled on the back of a tow truck slipped off its trailer and crashed into the Hendricksons' vehicle in Ogden Canyon. Three others were injured. Richard Hendrickson was the CEO and president of Lifetime Products. Tow truck driver Michael John Love, 51, is charged with two counts of manslaughter. Love was towing a 32,000-pound bulldozer, which was about 4,300 pounds over the maximum allowed weight for the tow truck. The bulldozer slid to the left while Love was negotiating a curve and broke free of its chain and tow cable, court documents state. The dozer then landed on top of the Hendricksons' SUV which was traveling in the opposite direction. After the crash, police say Love's "first actions after the crash were to attempt to place more chains into the scene to indicate the bulldozer was secured properly," demonstrating that he knew the bulldozer was not properly secured. 48.WEST HAVEN, Weber County, July 9 — Gavin Peterson, 12, died following years of abuse, including severe malnutrition, police say. Gavin's father, stepmother and an older brother were arrested. Shane Peterson, 46, Nichole Scott, 50, and Tyler Peterson, 21, are each charged with child abuse homicide. When Gavin was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, doctors noted his body "showed malnutrition to the point the child's internal organs had shut down completely. 49.AMERICAN FORK, July 12 — Matthew Clark Restelli, 42, was shot seven times shortly after arriving at his mother-in-law's American Fork home after driving from California. Family members claimed Restelli was armed and was shot in self-defense. But after an extensive investigation, police say Restelli's estranged wife, who was staying with her mother, lured him from California to Utah saying she wanted him to pick her up to go home. Instead, an unarmed Restelli was shot by his brother-in-law as he entered the house, police say, then a knife was planted in his hand to make it appear as if he was the aggressor. Kevin Stanley Ellis, 33; his sister Kathryn Restelli, 36, of Temecula, California; and her mother, Tracey Grist, 59, of American Fork, are each charged with murder. 50.WEST VALLEY CITY, July 13 — Nuer Deng, 17, a student at Judge Memorial Catholic High School and a member of the basketball team, was shot and killed while sitting in the back of a car stopped in a store parking lot, 2592 S. 5600 West. Mare Biel, 18, of Glendale, Arizona, and Bevan Kuajian, 17, of West Valley City, were arrested in Nebraska and both charged with murder. Police say both are documented gang members. The two had an ongoing disagreement with another person in Nuer's car and Nuer was an innocent bystander when he was shot and killed, according to investigators. 51.KANARRAVILLE, Iron County, July 17 — Jonathan Liquarri Brooks, 33, was shot. Kyle Black Jessop, 18, was later charged, but not with the shooting death. Jessop told police he and Brooks were smoking weed together when Brooks tried to sexually assault him and "lunged at him and was belligerent with him," resulting in Jessop shooting him with a rifle, court documents say. Prosecutors said there was evidence that Brooks had been acting violent and threatening, possibly due to drugs Jessop admitted he had provided Brooks. 52.PRICE, July 30 — Patrick Frank Whitten, 31, of Price, was shot by police responding to a domestic incident. 53.CEDAR CITY, July 25 — Kim Marie Lyons, 52, was found dead in her apartment from a drug overdose. An autopsy determined she likely died on July 18. Fentanyl, methamphetamine and other drugs were found in her system. Mark Edward Santanello, 42, who is accused of selling the drugs to the woman, is charged with manslaughter. Based on text messages between Santanello and the woman, police say he knew the drugs he was selling were dangerous, as he allegedly told her, "they are cartel ones so I wanna be around with Narcan when you try them." Charges say that "despite this knowledge, he provided them to her repeatedly, which ultimately led to her death." A warrant has been issued for Santanello's arrest. 54.TOOELE, Aug. 1 — Salt Lake County sheriff's deputy Marbella Martinez, 25, was strangled in her house, 1224 E. 970 North in Tooele. Her father, Hector Ramon Martinez-Ayala, 54, is charged with murder and is believed to have fled the country. Investigators say her father "was becoming increasingly obsessed and controlling" with his daughter, and some of his text messages to her were "more of the nature of a jealous lover than a father." After Martinez was killed, her father sent a message to his brother stating, "I made a big mistake, an unforgivable sin," before fleeing the country, according to police. 55.MILLCREEK, Aug. 3 — Naod Welday, 18, was shot and killed about 4:30 a.m. while inside a car at the Mount Olympus trailhead parking lot, 5425 S. Wasatch Blvd. Welday and his friends, who are not gang members, were approached by a group of documented gang members who prosecutors say may have targeted Welday's group because of how they looked. Welday tried to lock himself in a car, but the other group broke through the windows and shot him, according to police. 56.SALT LAKE CITY, Aug. 5 — Andrew Mozart Maka, 41, was shot during a party in the Glendale neighborhood. Police say Maka was showing off a gun inside an apartment near 1600 West and Snow Queen Place when it went off and he accidentally shot another man in the hand. 57.WEST HAVEN, Weber County, Aug. 5 — Weber County sheriff's deputies shot and killed Alvaro Uriarte, 31, after they say he took two children hostage with an "edged weapon." Deputies were originally called to an apartment, 2265 S. 1100 West, where an intoxicated man was threatening self-harm. But when Uriarte allegedly threatened to harm one of the children, two deputies fired their weapons. 58.SALT LAKE CITY, Aug. 8 — Taberon Dave Honie, 48, was put to death by lethal injection just after midnight at the state prison, 25 years after he was convicted of brutally killing his ex-girlfriend's mother in front of her three granddaughters. On July 9, 1998, Honie beat and stabbed 49-year-old Claudia Marie Benn until she was dead. On May 18, 1999, Honie was convicted of aggravated murder and was sentenced to death. After numerous years of appeals and a last-minute plea to the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole to have his sentence commuted to life in prison, his execution was carried out. 59.ROY, Aug. 17 — Jeremy Lundgreen, 46, was shot by police and died several days later. Lundgreen, who was wanted by the Utah Internet Crimes Against Children task force for investigation for enticing a minor, was stopped by Roy police near 5650 S. 2775 West. As soon as officers approached his car, he immediately pulled out a gun and began firing at them, according to police. That led to a shootout with officers that lasted several minutes. Witnesses say they heard 20 to 30 shots. Lundgreen was taken to a hospital but died three days later. 60.RIVERTON, Aug. 18 — Luke Swanson, 19, was shot during a confrontation with two other men. Swanson was found near Skippering Lane and Mimosa Street and was wearing a bulletproof vest and had a gun and a machete. Thomas Leelyn Rose, 19, and Max Day, 20, of Orem, are charged with obstruction of justice, but no charges have been filed for the man's death. 61.LAYTON, Aug. 21 — Michael Davies, 58, was shot by police outside his home. Officers were called to 2873 W. Lindi Way by the man's wife who claimed he was suicidal and armed with a gun. After approximately 40 minutes of negotiating with the man, he came out of the front door holding a pistol and a rifle and was shot a short time later by police. 62.SANDY, Aug, 23 — Kian Hamilton, 16, of Sandy, a freshman at Jordan High School and a member of the baseball team, was killed in a fight in the Mountain American Expo Center parking lot, 9575 S. State. Christopher Cazares de la Rosa, 16, who police say is associated with documented gang members, is charged as an adult with murder. Police say Kian's friend was involved in an ongoing conflict with another person and the two agreed to meet at the Expo Center parking lot to fight. 63.BALLARD, Uintah County, Aug. 24 — Owen Shuck, 44, was found deceased with multiple stab wounds and a blunt force injury to his head that police say left a dent in his skull. 64.MILLCREEK, Aug. 25 — John Mula, 14, was shot and killed in the parking lot of the Monaco Apartments, 4115 S. 430 East. Police say the shooting was gang-related and Mula was targeted, possibly in retaliation for a separate fatal shooting involving the same gangs. Jayvon Dajon Cooper, 20, and Jaden Dino Papenfuss, 17, are each charged with murder. Four others, ranging in ages from 14 to 17, are listed as co-defendants. 65.MIDVALE, Aug 25 — Stella Shaw, 4 months old, died after her head was smashed into the corner of a metal door. Zachary Jarred Walton, 28, was supposed to be babysitting the infant at the Road Home Shelter, 529 W. 9th Ave. while her mother worked, but allegedly became frustrated with the child's crying. While taking the infant to the roof of the facility to get some air, he is accused of smashing her head into the corner of the metal elevator door, twice. Stella died from her injuries on Sept. 6. 66.MINERSVILLE, Beaver County, Aug. 30 — Traeger Bradshaw, 26, of Minersville, died of a fentanyl overdose, after buying fentanyl from a Nevada woman, according to prosecutors. Chelsea Martyn Wiley, 31, of Mesquite, is charged with manslaughter, a second-degree felony, and accused of providing the drugs. Searching his phone records, police identified Wiley as a possible suspect. Police found text messages arranging a meeting in Mesquite to purchase fentanyl pills with Wiley telling him she has "really good ones" that are "way better than the last ones," charges state. 67.ST. GEORGE, Sept. 1 — Niki Ahlquist Sampson, 47, was found dead in her bedroom with bruises all over her body. Her husband Eric Larson Sampson, 50, is charged with murder. Earlier in the evening, one of Niki Sampson's friends had contacted police requesting a welfare check following a concerning phone call with her. That friend ended up going to her home near 2800 South and 2300 East himself and found her lifeless body on her bed. Police said she had multiple bruises in different stages of healing on her body. 68.LEHI, Sept. 2 — An 8-year-old boy with a disability accidentally shot and killed himself inside his mother's minivan parked outside a convenience store while his mother ran inside and left her gun in the vehicle unsecured. Jennifer Marie Pu'u, 44, of Lehi — who police say has a history of leaving guns lying around unsecured — was charged with manslaughter and abuse or neglect of a child with a disability. Pu'u drove her minivan with her son, who was disabled, to the Maverik convenience store, 3569 N. Thanksgiving Way. Within two minutes of leaving the vehicle, police say her son got ahold of her loaded and unsecured .380 M&P Shield pistol. 69, 70, 71.WEST HAVEN, Sept. 4 — Siblings Jordan Ibarra, 4, Yaitza Ibarra, 2, and Alitzel Ibarra, 1, were found deceased inside a car parked in their driveway at 1747 S. Prevedel Drive, along with their mother in a murder-suicide. Police believe Maribel Ibarra, 32, shot her three children in the rear cargo area of her vehicle before turning the gun on herself. Her family said, "As a family, we unfortunately knew nothing about her mental health. We always saw her as a loving mother, which makes this so shocking for us." 72.COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Sept. 20 — Matthew Johnson, 51, a member of the U.S. military Special Operations Unit, was shot in his sleep. His estranged wife, Jennifer Gledhill, 41, is charged with murder. Police say the shooting happened sometime between the night of Sept. 20 and the morning Sept. 21. Gledhill's boyfriend contacted Cottonwood Heights police claiming Gledhill told him she shot Johnson in the head while he slept, put his body in a storage container and buried him in a shallow grave. Gledhill had filed for divorce in July. Her parents, Thomas Gledhill, 71, and Rosalie Gledhill, 67, were arrested and accused of lying to investigators and helping clean up the death and dispose of evidence but no charges have been filed against them. 73.OGDEN, Sept. 21 — Vincent Tijerina, 45, was shot and killed about 4 a.m. while sitting or sleeping on a porch swing at his home, 2834 Childs Ave. Johnathon Geno Lemus, 31, is charged with murder. Joshua James Nava, 29, was charged with possession of a firearm by a restricted person and theft of a firearm. After the shooting, the two men allegedly went to Las Vegas. 74.DUCHESNE, Sept. 22 — Malaki Porter, 14, was shot and killed in his Duchesne house following what the sheriff's office said was a report of a family fight. His stepbrother, Haegan Ray Sagers, 16, is charged as an adult with murder. Sagers' attorney said the two got into a fight and Malaki came after Sagers with a gun and the boy was shot as they wrestled over the weapon. But prosecutors say the evidence doesn't support that, saying Sagers was angry, took the gun from Malaki, pointed at him and told police he "wanted to hurt him but not kill him" when he pulled the trigger. 75.EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Sept. 24 — Theo Jose Mora, 4 months, died after allegedly being abused by his mother. Raona Dorothy Mora, 32, is charged with aggravated murder. Mora "struck her 4-month-old child in the head hard enough to leave a visible indentation and cause fractures throughout the child's skull," charges say. Mora claims she fell out of bed while holding the infant and landed on him. Her husband, Jose Miguel Mora Rodriguez, was charged with child endangerment after an 8-year-old boy also living in their home tested positive for having THC metabolite in his system. 76.WEST VALLEY CITY, Sept. 24 — Henki Arteaga, 29, was shot in the parking lot of an apartment complex where his girlfriend lived near 1200 West and 3300 South. Yorfre Gremar Mavare-Mavare, 29, is charged with murder. The girlfriend told police Mavare had been living with her at the Village at Rivers Edge Apartments. But when her boyfriend, Arteaga, moved to Utah, she told Mavare he had to move out to make room for him, charges say. On the night the victim was shot, police say he was going to the store when he was confronted by Mavare. A warrant was issued for Mavare's arrest, who police say may have fled the country. 77.HEBER CITY, Sept. 25 — Patrick L. Hayes, 61, of Hideout, Wasatch County, was shot near the Ross Creek Day Use Area at Jordanelle State Park in a road rage case. Greg Kyle DeBoer, 62, of Peoa, Summit County, allegedly admitted shooting him, but said it was in self-defense. After a road rage incident, Hayes stopped and got out of his vehicle when DeBoer pulled up behind him. Deputies say Hayes had a metal baton and pocket knife in hand and "aggressively" called out DeBoer, who shot him. Hayes is accused of fleeing the scene without calling 911 and burying the gun near his house. He was questioned two weeks later and charged with obstructing justice last month. 78.LOGAN, Sept. 26 — Dennis Shaw, 77, of Logan, was stabbed and his body dumped off U.S. 89 in Logan Canyon. His son, Clayton Robert Shaw, 33 is charged with murder. Investigators learned that Dennis Shaw had recently been in a dispute with his son and that Clayton Shaw had been served with an eviction notice in July from one of his father's properties. One of Dennis Shaw's employees allegedly told police that Clayton Shaw's mental health had been declining and he had made threats against his father in the past. 79.DELLE, Tooele County, Sept. 26 — Jaspinder Singh, 46, of California, was found deceased inside the sleeper area in the cab of his semi that was stopped on the on-ramp to I-80 near Delle. Police say he "appeared to have lacerations to the area around his neck and lower extremities." Jaswinder Singh Dhillon, 46, of Ridgefield, Washington, is charged with aggravated murder. Investigators learned that Dhillon appeared to have been following Singh's semi for a considerable distance. 80.WEST VALLEY CITY, Oct. 2 — Nancy Sue Perst Arbon, 52, of Pleasant Grove, was hit head-on by a man driving the wrong way down a narrow one-way street while fleeing from police. Cesar Omar Perez, 23, of Lehi, is charged with murder for allegedly causing the fatal crash just east of the Valley Fair Mall. 81.SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 5 — Gage Barrows, 30, was shot multiple times in downtown Salt Lake City. Farshad Baesmat Hassan-Pouri, 49, of Salt Lake City, is charged with murder. Both men were walking outside a Maverik store, 185 S. State, and appeared to be arguing with each other when Hassan-Pouri pulled out a gun and fired multiple times at Barrows, charges say. Surveillance video shows Barrows trying to run away when police say Hassan-Pouri pursued him, then fired "multiple gunshots" at point-blank range after the man collapsed to the ground. 82.SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 7 — Jose Ramirez, 50, was shot and killed during a road rage confrontation. Thomas Jim Long, 44, of Salt Lake City, is charged with murder. Police believe Long may have initially been cut off by Ramirez. Both drivers then continued to brake check and swerve into the other, until both men crashed into a cement barricade on state Route 201 near 1000 West. Long exited his vehicle, approached Ramirez in his car "and fired 15 rounds at close range into the victim, who was unarmed," charges say. 83.ROOSEVELT, Oct. 7 — Kimberly Hyde, 60, of Roosevelt, was kidnapped, bound and stabbed and her body found inside her Honda Civic in Vernal. Her neighbor, Henry Cito Piano Resuera, Jr., 37, is charged with aggravated murder, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary. An arrest warrant was issued for Resuera who is believed to have fled to the Philippines. Police say Hyde was bound, stabbed and slashed multiple times and left hidden in her car to die after being kidnapped by Resuera. An autopsy found blunt force trauma to Hyde's face, eight stab wounds on her body that were determined to be superficial, and three larger and deeper wounds on her neck. Resuera's wife and son later told police he admitted killing Hyde and disclosed they are afraid of him based on prior domestic violence incidents, charges say. 84.TAYLORSVILLE, Oct. 9 — Henry Chavez, Jr., 28, was shot by a Taylorsville police officer investigating a stolen car case. The incident began about 10:15 p.m. when officers spotted a vehicle near 4500 South and 900 West that had been reported as stolen and had fled from officers in Salt Lake City. When the vehicle pulled into a parking lot near 3900 South and 300 West, officers attempted to make contact with its occupants. During the encounter, a Taylorsville police officer fired an undisclosed number of shots, hitting and killing Chavez who was inside the car. What prompted the officer to shoot has not been released. 85.TAYLORSVILLE, Oct. 13 — Jorge Llamas-Galaviz, 21, was shot inside his Taylorsville residence, near 2300 West and 4200 South, after getting into an argument with his girlfriend. After he kicked out Ariana Aguilar, 44, from his home, she allegedly called others to "jump" Llamas. The group then went into his bedroom while he was sleeping and attacked him, according to police. Alejandro Mendoza, 17, Ariana Aguilar, and Natalie Estella Aguilar, 19, all from Ogden, are each charged with murder and aggravated burglary. Four others, ages 14-16, are listed as codefendants. 86.SALT LAKE CITY, Nov. 15 — Oscar David Moreno, 26, was shot after allegedly shooting another man. During an argument among several people near 1045 E. 2100 South, Moreno is believed to have shot and critically injured a 38-year-old man, according to Salt Lake police. In response, a 30-year-old man shot and killed Moreno, police said. After interviewing several people, police made no arrests, instead saying the case would be turned over to prosecutors to decide whether the shooting was legally justified or if charges should be filed. 87.SALT LAKE CITY, Nov. 15 — Maxwell Rodgers, 21, was found shot outside his apartment complex near 800 S. Park Street. Police say that after shooting Rodgers, Charlie Andrew Warre Poulsen, 53, went back into his apartment where, following an hourslong standoff with a SWAT team, he was found dead as a result of suicide. 88.WEST HAVEN, Nov. 17 — James Kudelka, 30, was shot by Weber County sheriff's deputies following a standoff during which he barricaded himself and a woman inside an apartment complex near 2265 S. 1100 West, and allegedly threatened officers with a knife. Police say Kudelka and the woman had been arguing. Deputies on scene, concerned for the welfare of the woman, broke into the apartment and shot Kudelka after he allegedly came at them with a knife. The woman was not harmed. The Weber County Attorney's Office is reviewing the shooting to determine if the deputies were justified in using deadly force. 89.MURRAY, Nov. 21 — Panoum Jangjuol, 26, was shot in a parking lot at 4460 S. Fairbourne Ave. Pirawn Yohan Mula, 22, of Salt Lake City, is charged with murder. The two men were arguing when Mula pulled out a handgun and shot him twice to the back of the head at point-blank range without any justification, charges say. Jackson Baka Issa, 24, is charged with transferring or possession of a gun by a restricted person. 90.OGDEN, Nov. 24 — Jeffrey Allen Blue, 45, was shot by Ogden police in the 900 block of 1050 North. A woman had asked officers to be present while she collected her belongings from her home. Police say the woman's estranged husband was "confrontational and uncooperative," and brandished a CO2-powered BB gun that looked like a real gun when the woman and officers entered the home. 91, 92.CLINTON, Nov. 28 — Keith Miller, 40, and Jacob Pluim, 35, were shot in a home near 2600 West and 2250 North. Pluim died at the scene and Miller died at a hospital. Clinton police said Miller had arrived at Pluim's home as an invited guest on Nov. 27. When Miller attempted to leave later that night, Pluim confronted him and fired multiple shots. A third man, who police have not identified, armed himself and "attempted to communicate with Mr. Pluim. Due to Mr. Pluim's actions during this interaction, the male ultimately fired shots, resulting in Mr. Pluim's death," police said. The Davis County Attorney's Office declined to file charges. 93, 94, 95, 96.WEST VALLEY CITY, Dec. 14 — Bu Meh, 38, her son Boe Reh, 11, and daughters Kristina Ree, 8, and Nyay Meh, 2, were found shot inside their home at 3761 S. Oxford Way. Sha Reh, 17, was found alive but with a traumatic brain injury from being shot in the head. Police believe Bu Meh's husband, Dae Rah, 42, shot everyone in his family before killing himself. The bodies were discovered on Dec. 17, but police believe the shootings occurred a few days earlier. An exact motive for the shooting is unknown. Method: Shooting Motive: Unknown domestic
97.OGDEN, Dec. 27 — James Wynn Wood, 64, was hit by an alleged impaired driver. Tyson Bryce Treasure, 26, is charged with 14 crimes, including murder and leaving the scene of an accident involving death. Treasure had shown up intoxicated to Ogden Regional Medical Center but then refused treatment and took off in a Dodge Ram truck, hitting one vehicle in the parking lot as he drove away, according to police. Officers spotted the vehicle near 40th and Adams Street and briefly chased it before calling off the pursuit because of safety concerns. Treasure kept fleeing, however, and caused four more crashes, charges say. At 20th and Harrison, Treasure's vehicle hit two cars stopped for a red light, with the second vehicle being pushed into the intersection where it struck Wood who was in a crosswalk, according to police. 98.OGDEN, Dec. 30 — Elizabeth Jayne Horsley, 4 months, died at Primary Children's Hospital after suffering a catastrophic brain bleed. The baby's mother said the girl was fine in their home, 2531 Lincoln Ave., until after her father took her into another room for about 10 to 20 minutes and then the child was lifeless and not breathing, according to police. 99.WEST POINT, Weber County, Dec. 30 — Nathan Paul, 43, was shot by police who were responding to a domestic violence incident at a home near 670 N. and 2300 West. Family members told officers that Paul "was possibly suffering a mental health episode." A Davis County sheriff's deputy and Clinton police officers responded and said they discovered that Paul was armed. "Attempts to de-escalate the situation both verbally and with two nonlethal options were ineffective. As the situation developed, two Clinton officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect," police said. Officers had been called to the same house the night before regarding "similar concerns." Paul was taken for treatment at a hospital and was released earlier on the day of the shooting. 100.BLUFFDALE, Dec. 31 — Summer Tatiana Roney, 30, was found dead in the back seat of a car parked at a 7-Eleven, 15871 S. Redwood Road, with Jacob Holt Johnson, 40, who was arrested for investigation of murder. Police say the woman suffered "significant injuries and trauma that would be consistent with a homicide." Family members say Johnson was an estranged boyfriend. He told police the two had been in an argument over their relationship and he put her in his car after she suffered some injuries, but he didn't elaborate, an arrest report says.
