SALT LAKE CITY — Montreal Canadiens forward Emil Heineman was hit by a driver in downtown Salt Lake City Monday, according to police.
The Canadiens announced Heineman will miss 3-4 weeks with an "upper-body" injury due to the incident.
A driver struck Heineman, who was in the crosswalk, while making a right turn onto 500 South from 200 East, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. The driver went across multiple lanes as he turned and hit the player.
Heineman and the driver exchanged information and left the scene. A police report was filed later.
Utah Highway Patrol is investigating the incident due to the driver being a city employee. The mayor's office told KSL.com it doesn't comment on open investigations.
According to a Salt Lake City Police report, the Salt Lake City dispatch received a call at 2:55 p.m. about a pedestrian-involved car incident near 200 East and 500 South in Salt Lake City.
When officers responded and began an initial investigation, they could not locate the person who made the report (who was a passerby) or the pedestrian involved in the crash.
"Later in the evening, officers received information from a nearby business, which reported having information likely associated with the crash," the police report said. "Officers learned the pedestrian was a Montreal Canadiens hockey team player."
The team identified the pedestrian as Heineman, who did not show any signs of serious injuries and was being attended to by team doctors.
"I don't really know the story," Montreal coach Martin St. Louis said. "I just know that he got hurt crossing the street yesterday. I don't think it was at a high speed, but enough to cause some damage. So it's unfortunate."
The Canadiens will play the Utah Hockey Club on Tuesday in Montreal's first-ever visit to Utah.
"He has been hit by a car, nothing too serious. Maybe a broken wrist. A specialist will have a look at the injury," Heineman's agent Marcus Isaksson said to the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.
