WASHINGTON, Washington County — Human remains discovered over the weekend were identified by police and confirmed to be those of a male, police said.

The Washington Police Department said it was first notified when a hiker reported what appeared to be human remains on Sunday near the Bone Wash Trail and Elephant Arch hiking area in Washington.

"Officers from the Washington Police and deputies from Washington County Sheriff's Office responded promptly to the scene and confirmed the presence of human remains in various states of decomposition, indicating they had been there for an extended period of time," police said in a statement.

Detectives identified the remains as that of a man, and they were sent to the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner for further investigation to determine the cause of death, with police noting that at this time, "foul play does not appear to be a factor."

While the man's identity has not been released, it has been confirmed, and his family has been notified. Police did not say how they were able to identify the man, nor did they say how long ago they believed he died.

The case remains under investigation.
