WEST JORDAN — A man is spending time in prison after admitting to injuring a man with a knife in a Millcreek apartment.

Joaquin "Chewy" Alvaro Sanchez, 47, was sentenced on July 30 by 3rd District Court Judge Randall Skanchy to zero to five years in prison for aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury. He was given credit for the 235 days he had already spent in custody.

A police booking affidavit said police were called to Intermountain Medical Center in the early morning hours of Nov. 24, 2025, for a patient who had been stabbed, sustaining a 5-inch laceration.

The man reported that the assault was the result of a drug dispute that began on Nov. 7 when Alvaro gave him meth, and the man reported he was "pressured into distributing a large quantity" of the drug but did not want to and disposed of it instead, which angered Alvaro.

In a voicemail on Nov. 22, Alvaro said it was "about principle" that he "would come after" the man and his family.

Just a few days later, the man told police he went to a woman's residence near 4150 S. 300 East and Alvaro came out of a room, threatened the man and attacked him with the knife.

Alvaro pleaded guilty to the crime on May 21 as part of a plea deal that reduced the charge from a second-degree felony to a third-degree felony.
