PARK CITY — A Park City man accused of writing a derogatory message against the president on a bus stop is now facing a felony charge because of the cleanup costs.
Mark Lloyd Fernald, 61, was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with causing property damage, a second-degree felony.
On March 30 and again on April 13, Fernald wrote a derogatory message against President Donald Trump on the plexiglass panes at a public bus stop using black markers, according to charging documents.
"The ink collected dust resulting in etching on the panes that could not be merely buffed out. Park City had to purchase eight new panes that cost $7,958 not counting installation," the charges state.
Because the damage was more than $5,000, Fernald was charged with a second-degree felony.
The charge comes just 10 days after Fernald was charged in a separate case in 3rd District Court with carrying a weapon into a secure court area, a third-degree felony.
On March 31, Fernald enter the security checkpoint at Summit County Justice Court where he "was instructed to remove metal and weapons," according to charging documents. The next day, he was back at the courthouse and went through security again.
"Once (Fernald) passed through the security point, he told deputies he had been able to thwart their screening and that he had successfully smuggled a 'murder weapon' through the checkpoint. He removed a 12-inch tent stake from his waistband to show them," the charges say.
Fernald was also charged in Summit County Justice Court on March 16 with causing graffiti damage, a class B misdemeanor. In that case, he is accused of writing a similar derogatory message on a sign at the Park City Old Town Transit Center that displayed posters with old photos of the city's transit center system and history.
