WEST VALLEY CITY — A man who claimed he was the designated driver for the evening was arrested early Sunday and accused of being intoxicated and driving 126 mph.
A Utah Highway Patrol trooper was on state Route 201 near 3000 West when he noticed three vehicles coming up behind him. The slowest vehicle was traveling 113 mph and the fastest 126 mph, a police booking affidavit states.
The trooper pulled over the fastest car, an Audi.
"Upon approaching the vehicle, I could detect the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from inside the vehicle. The driver's eyes also appeared glossy and slightly bloodshot. When asked, the driver advised that they were on their way home from the club. The driver advised that he was the designated driver and that he had not been drinking," according to the affidavit.
The 23-year-old driver was then given a series of DUI tests, during which the trooper says the driver showed signs of being impaired.
After being taken into custody, the driver was transported to a UHP station where his blood-alcohol level was measured at 0.12%, or more than twice the legal limit, the affidavit says.
The man was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of DUI, reckless driving, exhibition driving and going more than 100 mph. The arrest report did not indicate whether troopers located the other two vehicles.
