TOOELE — A Tooele man was charged Monday with trying to kill his brother.
Derek Bryan Jones, 41, is charged in 3rd District Court with attempted murder, a second-degree felony.
On Friday, Jones "grabbed a knife and lunged toward his brother and stabbed him in the chest with the knife, and the brother did not die but was transported to the hospital with serious injuries," according to charging documents.
After the attack, at a residence near 700 N. Main in Tooele where both brothers live, "the victim called dispatch stating his intoxicated brother stabbed him," a police booking affidavit states.
"I spoke with a witness who stated Derek and the victim ... were arguing when Derek was slammed on the ground. He then got up, grabbed a paring knife from the counter and stabbed the victim," the affidavit alleges.
Police noted that "Derek has been in several verbal confrontations with his neighbors and currently has pending charges in a neighboring city for getting into a physical altercation and tried to escalate it to a physical altercation. Derek was in an argument with his brother when he stabbed him. I believe Derek would become emotional enough to stab a stranger while in an argument."
The affidavit also says, "In a previous case, Derek confronted a neighbor with a pickax, which started as (an) animal problem. Derek escalates situations very quickly and aggressively."
According to court records, Jones has several assault or aggravated assault convictions dating back to 2007.
