NEPHI — A man who police say drove 18 miles going the wrong way on I-15 was arrested early Wednesday, amazingly without hitting or injuring anyone.

Just after 2 a.m., the Juab County Sheriff's Office received a call of a wrong-way driver on I-15 who was northbound in the southbound lanes just north of Scipio. The deputy spotted the vehicle still on the freeway near Yuba Lake.

"I attempted to use my patrol vehicle to stop his vehicle from continuing wrong way with my emergency lights and siren activated. The vehicle passed me and came to a stop about 100 yards away," according to a police booking affidavit.

When the deputy asked the driver "what was going on, he said that everyone was trying to hit him," the affidavit states.

The deputy then asked the man where he was headed and he said Grand Rapids, Michigan.

"I asked him where he was coming from, but was unable to understand him," the arrest report says.

Yousif Mohamed Mustafa Anama, 34, was booked into the Juab County Jail for investigation of eight counts of reckless endangerment — one for each of the 911 calls the sheriff's office received reporting the wrong-way driver — reckless driving and driving on the wrong side of the road.

"In total Yousif drove 18 miles the wrong way, endangering the lives of countless people on the roadway," according to the affidavit.
