PROVO — The job isn't done just yet.
But there's few teams in the country that can match what BYU has done this season. Ignore the fact that the Cougars have easily overshot their preseason win projections and blew past the Las Vegas disrespect on the road at UCF, but they're also really good, too.
Oh, and there's a real shot for BYU to make an appearance in the 12-team College Football Playoff as either the winner of the Big 12 or as an at-large team.
With the bye week and four games left in the regular season, BYU is taking nothing for granted. For now, it's riding the wave of success en route to what could be a special postseason — the season has already been a success.
As part of that wave, BYU has established itself as one of the best teams in the country; and on Sunday afternoon, the Cougars found themselves ranked No. 9 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll, up two spots from last week.
With a 13-point win on the road, voters felt that BYU was deserving of a top-10 ranking and the top spot in the Big 12, jumping an Iowa State team that was on a bye week. The Cyclones checked in at No. 11 — down one spot and tied with Clemson — this week and is the only other undefeated team from the Big 12.
The Big 12 now has four teams ranked in the AP poll, with Kansas State moving down one spot to No. 17, and Colorado moving into the poll for the first time at No. 23 following a win over Cincinnati. No other team from the conference is receiving votes.
At the top, No. 1 Oregon remains the favorite team with 61 of the total 62 first-place votes, with No. 2 Georgia as the only other team to secure the remaining first-place vote. Behind the Bulldogs, who were on the bye week, is No. 3 Penn State, No. 4 Ohio State and No. 5 Miami.
The undefeated Hurricanes jumped Texas to sneak into the top five after a 36-14 win over Florida State.
