SALT LAKE CITY — Sometimes being inactive for a weekend is more beneficial than playing.

Such was the case for BYU and Utah in a chaotic and unstable Week 6 of college football action that featured five teams from the top 11 of the Associated Press Top 25 losing.

The two local teams got a chance to heal up ahead of the middle part of their schedule on a bye week, as well as seeing their status in the rankings improve in the latest AP poll that was released Sunday.

BYU moved up to No. 14 this week, up three spot from last week's jump to No. 17. The Cougars likely benefited from SMU now ranked inside the top 25 to strengthen the Cougars' 5-0 resume for the 2024 season.

Utah also moved in the rankings on a bye week, up two spots to No. 16 after a 4-1 start to the season before a Friday night road contest against a 4-1 Arizona State team.

Though the two local teams moved up in the rankings this week, Iowa State remains at the top of the Big 12 at No. 11 (tied with Notre Dame) after a 43-21 win at home against Baylor. Also ranked from the Big 12 is No. 18 Kansas State, who also was on a bye week.

Texas Tech, after a win over Arizona, is receiving votes, as is Colorado.

After a one-week drop to No. 2, Texas moved back up to the top of the rankings with 52 first-place votes after a shakeup in the top 10, including Alabama falling to Vanderbilt 40-35. Behind the Longhorns is No. 2 Ohio State (9 first-place votes), No. 3 Oregon, No. 4 Penn State, and No. 5 Georgia.
