SALT LAKE CITY — As the United States approaches its semiquincentennial celebration, Utah drivers will be able to purchase, for a limited time, a license plate with a fresh new design.

Utah currently offers four standard issued plates: a plain white design featuring an American flag with the words "In God We Trust"; a skier with the words "Greatest Snow on Earth"; an image of Delicate Arch with the words "Life Elevated"; and a tan license plate required for all off-highway vehicles.

In recent years, the historic black and white Utah license plate has been popular in the state.

But come June 1, Utahns will be able to choose a new, deep blue design featuring the original U.S. flag with its 13 stars and "1776" written in the center.

"Utahns are excited to celebrate America's 250th anniversary and reflect on the principles that have shaped our nation. This plate is a simple way for people across our state to show that pride and be part of this historic milestone," said Sen. Dan McCay, R-Riverton, who represented the Senate on the design review board.

The design will be available through the Utah Motor Vehicle Division for a little over a year until it will no longer be offered after July 31, 2027.

The plates can be requested while renewing your registration or any time through DMV's website at dmv.utah.gov. Drivers may also personalize their plate for an extra fee, but "USA250" will not be available.

USA Today reports 11 other states have introduced America 250 license plate themes as of April 11:

  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Idaho
  • Indiana
  • Louisiana
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • Pennsylvania
  • South Carolina
  • Virginia
