TREMONTON — The sounds of birds, dogs and footsteps filled the Holmgren Nature Preserve Trail Tuesday evening as dozens of people gathered for a community walk honoring fallen Tremonton Police Sgt. Lee Sorensen.

For Sorensen's wife, Lanette Sorensen, the quiet nature preserve holds special meaning.

"This was his favorite area to do bike patrol," she said.

The trail was one of Lee Sorensen's favorite places to connect with people while serving the community.

"Every day that he could, he would come and do bike patrol here," said Lanette Sorensen.

The walk was organized through a Box Elder County 4-H dog program and gave people a chance to spend time outdoors with their dogs while also supporting the Sorensen family.

"Hiking is a great one to do with your dog," said Lanette Sorensen, who is a longtime member of the 4-H dog program.

What began as a community walk became something more as neighbors, friends and supporters gathered to spend time together and show they have not forgotten Lee Sorensen or his family.

There were raffles, hot dogs and even a garbage cleanup on the trail.

Jennifer Bjorn was among those who attended.

"Honestly, whatever Lanette has going on, it's important to us," said Bjorn. "She's always been my friend. We've really loved and appreciated the program, and we're basically here to support her in any way that we can."

For Lanette Sorensen, the support continues to make a difference.

"The community has been amazing," she said. "The support that we've received and that (we) continue to receive, help, if I need anything, all I have to do is make a call."
