SALT LAKE CITY — The Bonneville Fire's proximity to the University of Utah campus is prompting university leaders and the Salt Lake City Fire Department to remind residents to prepare for future wildfires.

During a Monday briefing, officials discussed wildfire preparedness, injury prevention and the importance of having a plan before an emergency happens.

The fire also had an impact on some patients at University of Utah Hospital. Dr. Giavonni Lewis, medical director of the University of Utah Health Burn Center, said the flames and smoke were a difficult reminder for some burn survivors recovering from previous injuries.

"This wildfire in the Bonneville foothills was really close to home, and our patients could see the fire and smell the fire," Lewis said.

Lewis added that the experience created an additional emotional challenge for some patients.

"For them this was really personal. It created a secondary trauma," he said.

The University of Utah and Salt Lake City Fire held the briefing to highlight the importance of wildfire preparation and ways residents can reduce injuries during an emergency.

Officials recommend residents create a 96-hour emergency kit that includes important documents, medications, pet supplies and other household essentials.

Fire officials also encourage people to follow evacuation orders, leave early when instructed, and use the Ready, Set, Go! program.

These steps will prepare their homes and families before a wildfire threatens their community.
