- Eastbound I-84 through Weber Canyon will be closed from Sunday morning through Monday morning as part of a bridge upgrade project.
- Closures will also occur in the road section on June 21, 22 and 23 from 2:30-9:30 p.m. each day.
- The work will result in significant detours for impacted eastbound motorists.
SALT LAKE CITY — The eastbound lanes of I-84 through the Weber Canyon will close much of Sunday to accommodate a bridge replacement project, requiring significant detours for motorists using the road section.
The closure will start at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday and extend until 4 a.m. on Monday. The same closure will also occur on June 21, 22 and 23 from 2:30-9:30 p.m. each day.
"The closures will allow crews to install bridge beams for two new bridges over the river and railroad tracks just east of the mouth of Weber Canyon. The existing bridges were built in 1965 and have undergone multiple repairs and rehabilitation projects over the past two decades," the Utah Department of Transportation said in a statement.
The construction spot is about 3 miles east of U.S. 89 along I-84, just west of the Weber Canyon rest stop for eastbound traffic, where Weber, Davis and Morgan counties meet.
I-84 through the Weber Canyon is a narrow, winding road with variable speed limits in some sections as a safety consideration. The new bridges, one for eastbound traffic, one for westbound vehicles, will cross the Weber River just west of the current crossing point, and the I-84 trajectory will be adjusted slightly as part of the $52 million project.

The project will result in "improved detailing and geometry, resulting in a safer and more efficient facility for the traveling public," according to the UDOT website on the project.
The looming closure of the eastbound traffic lanes through the canyon, however, will require significant detours.
Most eastbound traffic will be detoured onto northbound I-15 to eastbound state Route 39, also known as 12th Street, through Ogden and the Ogden Canyon to Trappers Loop Road, or state Route 167. Motorists can take Trappers Loop Road south to reconnect to I-84 near Mountain Green.
Vehicles longer than 50 feet are prohibited in Ogden Canyon, thus all recreational vehicles, trucks pulling trailers and other vehicles exceeding the length will need to take an alternate route. They should take southbound I-15 to eastbound I-80 and continue through Parleys Canyon to the I-84 interchange near Echo.
The I-84 bridge project started in March 2025 and is expected to extend to the fall of next year. The existing bridges over the Weber River at the location will eventually be demolished.
Other ramp closures are looming in connection with the I-215 West Improved Project in Salt Lake County, according to UDOT:
- The southbound I-215 ramp to westbound S.R. 201 will stay closed until Saturday.
- The eastbound and westbound I-80 ramps to northbound I-215 will close starting next Monday and last for 30 days.
- The westbound I-80 ramp to southbound I-215 will be closed until mid-August.
- The ramp from Redwood Road to northbound I-215 will be closed until July 2027.
In Davis County, Legacy Parkway between Parrish Lane in Centerville and Park Lane in Farmington will be closed from Monday through June 18 starting at around 9 p.m. each night until 5 a.m. the following day. The closures will allow for removal of overhead signage.
