Why Strawberry Reservoir is producing some of the biggest rainbow trout in a decade

Save Story

Strawberry Reservoir has long been one of Utah's premier fishing destinations, but many anglers believe this year's rainbow trout fishery is something special. Reports of large, healthy trout have been pouring in, with some calling it the best fishing they've experienced in a decade.

To find out why, we traveled to Strawberry Reservoir and joined a local family for a day on the water. The action was fast, the fish were impressive, and the stories about giant rainbows proved to be more than just fishing tales.

We also sat down with Utah Division of Wildlife Resources biologist Alan Ward to learn what's happening beneath the surface. Ward explains the combination of factors helping rainbow trout thrive and reach impressive sizes.
