SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake man is now facing criminal charges tied to a weekend shooting during a large fight outside a Salt Lake bar. Detectives say the incident was gang-related.
Angelo Mark Garcia Jr., 40, was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court with shooting a gun causing serious injury and aggravated assault resulting in serious injury, first-degree felonies; being a restricted person in possession of a gun and seven counts of illegal discharge of a firearm, second-degree felonies; rioting, a third-degree felony, and two counts of improper discharge of a gun, a class A misdemeanor. Most of the charges come with gang-related penalty enhancements if convicted.
On Saturday, police responded to reports of a fight and shooting at Johnny's SLC, formerly Johnny's on Second, 165 E. 200 South.
"Witnesses on scene reported that a large fight of 15-20 people began inside Johnny's ... and the fight then spilled outside the bar on the sidewalk," according to charging documents. That's when a man fired "multiple rounds into the air and then pointed the gun to the east and fired additional rounds."
Garcia is seen in surveillance video walking to an SUV, "retrieving something, then pointing a firearm in the air and firing multiple rounds. Garcia then fires five rounds in the direction of several individuals, including the victim," the charges state.
The victim told police "he was shot once and had received surgery to have his spleen removed and had internal injuries," according to court documents.
After the shooting, prosecutors say Garcia, a documented gang member, walked toward the victim in the middle of the street and accused him of being a rival gang member. Ten shell casings were recovered at the scene.
A second man is listed in court documents as a co-defendant, but formal charges had not been filed against him as of Wednesday afternoon.
