When elite athletes compete on the world stage, every little detail matters — from training schedules to sleep habits to what they drink after a workout. So when the U.S. speedskating team packed their bags for the 2026 Winter Games, they made one special request: chocolate milk.
It might sound simple, but behind that request was a proven recovery strategy.
The recovery drink hiding in plain sight
Before leaving for Italy, U.S. speedskating athletes and staff requested lactose-free chocolate milk — specifically Darigold FIT — be available during the Games, Dairy West helped coordinate logistics to ensure the product arrived in Milan when the team did.
Throughout the Games, athletes relied on the chocolate milk between training sessions and races — and came home with six medals to show for it.
Of course, no single drink wins medals. But smart fueling strategies like this one play a big role in helping athletes stay strong when it matters most.

Why chocolate milk works
Sports dietitians often point to the perfect post-workout trio: protein, carbohydrates, and fluids. Chocolate milk naturally provides protein for muscle repair, carbohydrates to replenish energy, and fluids to help rehydrate after intense exercise. No blender required.
According to Jen Day, PhD, RD, CSSD, sports dietitian for U.S. Speedskating, the team relies on simple, effective recovery options. "The U.S. Speedskating team understands and appreciates the benefits that dairy provides for training and recovery."
Day requested Darigold FIT because it's lactose-free — catering to more athletes on the team — and comes in shelf-stable, single-serve bottles. "They can throw a bottle in their gym bag and drink it right after training ends," she said. "I always get comments when I'm checking out at Costco with a cart full of milk — our athletes use a lot of it!"
Protein: the muscle-repair MVP
Intense exercise stresses your muscles, which is actually how they grow stronger — but recovery requires replenishment.
Dairy protein is considered high-quality protein because it contains all essential amino acids needed for muscle repair and recovery.
"Twenty to thirty grams of protein are recommended after intense training to kick off the recovery process," Day explained. "Darigold FIT milk has a protein content within that range, making it a great all-in-one recovery option."
And protein's benefits reach beyond muscle repair. "Having adequate protein supports immune function, hormone production, fluid balance, and even helps build bones, skin, and blood," Day said.
What this means for the rest of us
You don't have to be a world-class athlete to think like one. Whether you're tackling a morning workout, hiking the Wasatch, or joining a weekend basketball game, your body still needs the same recovery essentials: protein to rebuild, carbs to refuel, and fluids to rehydrate.
And the best part? The same chocolate milk fueling world-class speedskaters is sitting in your local grocery store. Sometimes the best recovery drink isn't complicated — it can be something simple, familiar, and delicious.
