OREM — An Orem man made a false police report that resulted in a large police response, all because his roommate confronted him about giving alcohol to teenagers, police say.
Luis D. Romero Abreu, 35, was charged Monday in 4th District Court with emergency reporting abuse, a second-degree felony; contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a class B misdemeanor; and intoxication, a class C misdemeanor.
On Feb. 22, Abreu called police falsely claiming his roommate had taken a woman hostage at gunpoint and told officers to hurry "and continued to say they were in danger," according to charging documents. "Fourteen officers from four agencies responded to this report."
When officers arrived, Abreu continued to claim his roommate threatened him with a gun, "which led officers to believe there were multiple people in the home whose lives were in danger," the charges state. Officers "had to break the bedroom window to evacuate" an elderly woman who was asleep inside.
When officers entered the roommate's bedroom, they found him in a closet and noted that he "was not armed and highly intoxicated," the charges say. Police did not find a gun in the room.
The roommate told police that he had confronted Abreu about Abreu giving alcohol to a 15-year-old girl and 13-year-old boy in the residence, which prompted Abreu to make the false police report, according to the charges. Police say they "could smell the odor of alcohol" coming from the two teens.
