OGDEN — Police announced Tuesday that officers have arrested a 16-year-old boy for investigation of arson related to a weekend fire that destroyed a structure in Ogden.

The fire was reported about 4:30 p.m. Saturday and quickly devoured an under-construction apartment building located across the street from the public safety building at 2186 Lincoln Ave, Ogden Fire Chief Mike Mathieu said. Firefighters fought the blaze for several hours, working to save nearby buildings from wind-blown embers and flames around the area.

The structure is considered a complete loss, and multiple surrounding buildings suffered significant damage. Initially, firefighters said there was no evidence of anything suspicious with the fire, and the blaze likely started in the interior of the building.

In a press conference Tuesday, Ogden Police Chief Jacob Sube announced evidence shows the fire was "intentionally set."

A 16-year-old boy from Roy was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon for investigation of arson, causing a catastrophe and felony mischief. Police said the teen is not a resident of Ogden but attends a school in the city, and his identity was not released.

Police said the teen could be facing felony charges for the "significant" damage caused. It appears the boy acted alone in the alleged arson, police said.
