SOUTH JORDAN — South Jordan police said Tuesday the person shot and killed by police during a shootout on Friday was a 17-year-old boy.

His name has not been released.

South Jordan officers responded to reports of a vehicle theft on Friday. Police said the person inside the vehicle fired at officers, and officers returned fire while he ran away.

Multiple agencies responded and found the alleged gunman in a nearby backyard. Police have said little about the shooting that ultimately took the 17-year-old's life.

The teenager was taken into custody and transported to a hospital, where he died.

Tuesday's statement from South Jordan police said investigators worked throughout the weekend to identify him and notify his family.

The investigation is still ongoing, and the city said it will be turned over to the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office once it is completed.

The shooting happened after 10 p.m. on Friday near 9400 South and 4600 West. It was the fourth fatal police shooting in just five days in Utah.
