THE HIGHWAY — Years and years ago, I was hiking near Alpine with some friends. In the long grass on a hilltop, we found an old tractor tire. We stood up the enormous tire and marveled at its durability. It had been there at least a few decades.

Unsure of what to do with our amazing find, we began nudging it toward the hill's slope. The tire, as you'd imagine, began rolling. It gained speed as it charged downhill, kicking up dust and terrifying all snakes and squirrels in its path.

The tire showed no sign of slowing once it reached flat ground. It bounced along through a field, then crossed onto a gravel road. Aided by the relative smoothness of the road, it carried on out of sight.

We never found out where that tire ended up. But it was amazing to watch it come to life like that.

Kind of like the springy little tire in this video:

The way that tire zipped and bounced all over the road made it look like a high-energy puppy that had been locked up in the house all day and was then released into the backyard.

Pure joy.

Except, of course, for the unfortunate van driver who lost the tire in the first place.
