SALT LAKE CITY — Two men are dead after a shooting and SWAT negotiation that happened late Friday night into Saturday morning near Liberty Park, police say.
At around midnight on Friday, a 21-year-old and 53-year-old man were outside an apartment near 800 South Park Street, when "a shooting occurred," according to a press release sent out Saturday.
Officers and first responders were dispatched to the area to find the 21-year-old critically injured, the release says. He died on scene, and "the specific circumstances or motive of the shooting are not known" according to investigators.
Police say the 53-year-old man was then believed to have gone back into his apartment. When officers tried to communicate with him, "he did not engage," the release says.
A SWAT team and crisis negotiators were called to try to get the man to cooperate. They worked for several hours, providing an update to the media at 5:15 a.m. that he was still refusing to come out of the apartment.
A search warrant was obtained to go into the apartment Saturday morning, police say. SWAT officers entered the building to find the man dead inside, according to police.
Investigators say "this appears to be an isolated incident," though they are also investigating another shooting that happened in Sugar House early Saturday, which they believe to be unrelated.
