SALT LAKE CITY — Numerous Mexican films are to be featured at FILMéxico, a festival organized by the Salt Lake Film Society that begins on Thursday.

The festival "will spotlight diverse storytelling that reflects the wide Mexican heritage that exists in our Utah community as well as some of the most impactful and thought-provoking contemporary Mexican cinema," the film society said in a press release. The Mexican Consulate in Salt Lake City and Artes de México en Utah, an arts and cultural organization, are helping put on the event.

The festival starts Thursday at 7 p.m. with showings of "Little Birds," a short film directed by Gabriela Badillo, followed by "Valentina or the Serenity," directed by Ángeles Cruz. A panel discussion will follow. Daily showings of additional films will follow through Nov. 20, when the festival — now in its 13th year — ends.

FILMéxico "is cinema that speaks directly to us and brings new perspectives that give us the opportunity to share unique experiences, unforgettable moments and enjoy the best Mexican filmmaking on the big screen," festival promotional material says. The offerings highlight "acclaimed filmmakers and emerging voices" as well as Indigenous filmmakers.

Other films to be featured include "Underdogs," "Leave What Scares You," "Goya," "Rebelled," "Unseen," "The Weaver's Song" and "The Echo." The movies will be shown at the Broadway Centre Cinema at 111 E. Broadway in Salt Lake City.
