HERRIMAN — The American Heritage Patriots capped off an impressive season with a decisive 3-0 victory over the Waterford Ravens on Saturday, clinching their first-ever 2A girls soccer state championship.
The Patriots entered the title game on a 15-game win streak and a record of 16-3, while the Ravens, ranked second, came in on their own five-game winning streak at 12-3 and determined to avenge a regular-season overtime loss to the Patriots.
American Heritage wasted no time setting the tone, though, kicking off with aggressive offensive play led by freshman standout Aurie Pack and junior Paisley Gardner.
The Patriots' persistence paid off in the 13th minute when Pack assisted Gardner, who fired a shot across her body to find the back of the net, giving American Heritage an early 1-0 lead.
"We are all best friends on and off the field," Patriots player Riley Jansen said. "Our biggest thing going into today was to win every ball and make simple passes. It's everything we've worked for this entire season, and honestly, I'm in shock."
Despite several strong counter attacks by the Ravens, American Heritage's defense held firm, with a critical save by defender Carlee Vonk just before halftime. Vonk dashed in to block what seemed like a sure goal by Waterford's Milana Massinople, preserving the Patriots' lead as they went into the break.
Waterford's defense, anchored by goalkeeper Halee Hasebi, withstood wave after wave of Patriots attacks, with Hasebi making pivotal saves that kept the Ravens within reach.
But American Heritage continued their relentless push in the second half, scoring again in the 50th minute.
A perfectly executed corner kick from Sadie Stratton connected with Jansen, who directed the ball into the goal to extend the lead to 2-0.
"It's unreal!" Jansen said. "I feel so lucky and honored and just grateful. Our coaches are amazing, these players are amazing, and we have such a good team."
As the Ravens fought to regroup, freshman Ada Werner, who had been a key player for the Patriots all season, delivered a third goal in the 59th minute.
With a 3-0 lead, American Heritage looked unstoppable and a championship dream within sight.
The Ravens attempted a late comeback, but the Patriots' defense, including strong saves by goalkeeper Camryn Woodley, shut down any hope of Waterford's comeback.
Head coach Eleonor Stafford praised her team's dedication and unity after the game.
"I am so proud of them. We worked so hard this season, and it really showed today," Stafford said. "It's about teamwork. We put aside the stats and the egos of each player and came together. We all set goals to win state, and that's what we've been working toward."
Reflecting on the journey, Stafford said: "We were the underdogs for quite a while, and to be here, it's an amazing experience. As a coach, to see that the girls were seeing the bigger picture really shows their maturity."
With the final whistle, American Heritage celebrated its first state title in girls soccer history, a testament to their hard work, resilience, and the bonds they forged throughout the season. The Patriots' victory opens a new chapter for the program, establishing a high bar for future seasons.
