SALT LAKE CITY — There are just two teams at the top of the Big 12 standings with a 4-0 record after the first week of conference play.
Those two teams, BYU and Utah, took care of business against ranked teams Saturday, handing long-standing Big 12 members and perceived conference title contenders a loss over the weekend.
The two rivals lock arms — maybe that's too much? — atop the conference but also share a spot inside the latest rankings of the Associated Press Top 25 poll for the first time this season.
Utah moved up two spot to No. 10 after a 22-19 win on the road against Oklahoma State with freshman quarterback Isaac Wilson getting the start under center as Cam Rising rehabs an injured throwing hand.
Wilson became the first true freshman quarterback at Utah to win a game against an AP Top 25 team, while securing a 2-0 record as the team's starter.
Meanwhile, BYU enters the rankings for the first time this season at No. 22 following a 38-9 dismantling of Kansas State at home. The Cougars defense took control of the game and overwhelmed a Wildcats squad that had no answer in a raucous LaVell Edwards Stadium.
Outside of the two rivals, the Big 12 has three other teams ranked this week, including No. 18 Iowa State, No. 20 Oklahoma State — who drops six spots — and No. 23 Kansas State.
The Wildcats had the biggest drop in the rankings, falling 10 spots after failing to score a touchdown on the road against the Cougars.
The conference title race is far from over, but the Cougars being at the top of the standings comes as a bit of a surprise after the team that finished 5-7 its first year in the Big 12 was picked to finish 13th out of 16 teams of the newly-expanded conference. But BYU is getting it done early.
At the top of the latest rankings is Texas, who got to see redshirt freshman quarterback Arch Manning start a game for the Longhorns for the first time, with 44 first-place votes. Behind Texas in the AP rankings is No. 2 Georgia (13), No. 3 Ohio State (5), No. 4 Alabama and No. 5 Tennessee, who jumps Ole Miss this week.
Georgia and Alabama will battle it out this weekend in an SEC showdown for what could provide a shakeup in the rankings.
