HIGHLAND — A 17-year-old driver was flown to the University of Utah Burn Center after a car crash early Thursday.
A Facebook post from the Lone Peak Police Department says an off-duty officer was driving home just after midnight when he encountered a vehicle going "well above the speed limit" heading west on Canal Boulevard in Highland.
The officer attempted to make a traffic stop and the vehicle sped through a red light on Alpine Highway and "failed to navigate a bend in the road," police said. The vehicle then left the road and hit a tree in Windsor Meadows Park before bursting into flames.
"Officers from Lone Peak Police Department and American Fork Police Department worked diligently to free the 17-year-old driver from the fiery wreckage," the post says.
A video of the scene showing the aftermath of the crash and the burned-out vehicle was also posted by the Lone Peak Fire District.
The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and his condition was unknown Thursday afternoon.
