KANSAS CITY — Simon the dog was found in Kansas City, Missouri, looking like a prehistoric creature, with more than 6 pounds of matted fur on his tiny body.
If I saw a dog like him in the wild running at me, I'd be a little freaked out at what was coming toward me.
One caretaker named Tori said it was "heartbreaking" seeing him try to move and walk with all the extra fur. Simon couldn't regulate his temperature and was way too hot underneath the blanket of hair.
Rescuers at KC Pet Project took care of him and transformed him into an adorable puppy again, tackling the tedious job of very carefully trimming off all the fur.
KC Pet Project said it was one of the worst matting cases they have ever seen, and it took two hours to fix him up.
He stayed for a while at the animal hospital to recover and heal, and underneath all that fur he had big, beautiful eyes and an adventurous spirit. Caretakers said it took him a while to learn how to walk normally again without all the extra weight.
A few weeks later, potential adoptees came in and started showing him love. He immediately loved the couple and soon went home with a new happy family.
