BREAKING THE TAPE — Jane Hedengren's tour de force in her final high school track and field season continued this past weekend with a pair of national indoor records.
The senior BYU commit from Timpview High in Provo blazed to a U.S. high school mile record in 4 minutes, 26.14 seconds at Nike Indoor Nationals in New York City on Sunday, just three days after breaking an American record in the 5,000 meters.
Representing Utah's Roadrunners TC, Hedengren ran the 5,000 in an American high school and under-20 record time of 15:13.26 on Thursday evening before shaving more than a second off the previous record in the indoor mile.
"I wanted to get the 5K record, but the mile is a surprise," said Hedengren, whose Timpview teammate Lily Alder finished seventh in the mile in 4:46.90. "I'm just stoked; lots of forward momentum going forward."

It's all part of a whirlwind senior campaign for Hedengren, the Gatorade national cross country athlete of the year who won the Utah 5A state title by more than 40 seconds before adding individual championships at Nike Cross Southwest regionals and Nike Cross Nationals in the fall.
On Monday, the Utah starlet was part of a trio of name, image and likeness signings by Nike — where her future coach at BYU, Diljeet Taylor, will operate the shoe and apparel giant's Swoosh Track Club out of Provo.
Nike promoted the signings as "part of its ongoing effort to expand the sport of the next generation."
"Being part of the Nike family means a lot to me" Hedengren told FloTrack. "I get to represent the best innovative products while being with a supportive and winning group."
