THE TRAIN STATION – There are times when a refreshing splash of water is just what the doctor ordered.
I'll never forget one brutally hot day in southern Italy in 2003. I was exploring Bari, which is probably an amazing city when the temperature isn't dangerously high. Unfortunately, I was just focused on not melting.
As I walked down the street, I passed a small grocery store. Fruits and vegetables were displayed in front of the shop, and the owner had installed a sprinkler overhead to keep them cool and fresh.
I didn't even notice the sprinkler until a fine mist hit my face as I passed the store. Wow. It was such an amazing surprise. I stayed there for about 15 minutes, pretending to look at strawberries and kale.
But all that mattered was that I was cooling down, and I'll always be thankful for that unexpected spritz of water.
I wasn't present when the following video was captured, but my guess is that it wasn't quite such a blissful experience. Check it out:
For starters, this looks like a chilly day. So the wave of water created by the train would've been jarring, rather than refreshing.
More importantly, the water is probably mixed with oil and all manner of gunk from the tracks. So it's more like a wave of sludge than a pleasing mist.
Anyhow, I think it's safe to say that none of these train passengers will have fond memories about this experience.
