SALT LAKE CITY — Two men died Sunday in what police called a "workplace shooting" at Varex Imaging, 1678 S. Pioneer Road (2700 West).
Hay Ly, 61, was shot and killed inside the business by 56-year-old Miller Bin, who then left the building and fatally shot himself in the parking lot, Salt Lake City police announced Monday. A motive for the shooting has not been determined.
Police received a 911 call at 2:33 p.m. Sunday about a man with a gun at the business.
"Officers responded and located two men dead, one inside the complex and the other outside," police said in a statement. Officers said they recovered a gun near the body of the man outside the building.
In a statement, Varex Imaging said both men were employees at the company.
"Our condolences and heartfelt support are with the impacted families," Varex chief financial officer Sam Maheshwari said, adding the company is offering onsite counseling throughout the week for employees and their families.
Varex Imaging is a business that creates high-quality components for X-ray imaging systems, according to its website.
Multiple police officers responded to the scene Sunday afternoon.
"The psychological trauma experienced by witnesses of workplace violence can have a very significant and lasting impact. Our victim advocates will be available to help any of the employees impacted by this shooting as our detectives work to determine a motive," Salt Lake Police Chief Mike Brown said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"Workplace violence can range from a simple assault all the way up to what we're investigating today, a homicide," said Salt Lake police spokesman Brent Weisberg. "That can have an emotional toll on (employees)."
Weisberg said Salt Lake police have not investigated a workplace homicide in recent years.
