BRIGHAM CITY — Doug Christensen, a career Utah Highway Patrolman, was elected as the new Box Elder County Sheriff as final results were tallied early Wednesday.
Christensen, as well as Allen Shinney, entered the race as unaffiliated candidates because they submitted too late to run in the Republican primary. Both entered following controversy over several agencies in Tremonton, Brigham City and Perry, opting to move their dispatch services with Weber area 911.
Deputy Mike Allred defeated incumbent Sheriff Kevin Potter in the primary election in June.
Christensen was born and raised in Bear River, where he continues to reside.
In an interview late Tuesday, Christensen said he wants to bring fresh ideas into the office and improve morale.
"An outside influence that can really help the department and bring in fresh ideas, a fresh perspective," Christensen said. "Between the community involvement and officer involvement, we've got to be on the same page. And that's one of those things that is never going to change."
