LEHI — An 18-year-old man who claims he has fled from police about 40 times was arrested late Tuesday following a high-speed chase.
About 11 p.m., a Utah Highway Patrol trooper patrolling southbound I-15 at the Point of the Mountain spotted a Ford Mustang pass him at a high rate of speed, according to a police booking affidavit.
"The speed indicated on my radar was 105 mph," the trooper stated in the affidavit. "I observed the speed of the vehicle increase to 117 mph on my front moving radar. I then lost sight of the vehicle for around 2 miles."
When the trooper spotted the vehicle again, he says it was "blacked out — turning off its headlights and tail lights," according to the affidavit. The Mustang also had no license plate displayed.
"The vehicle speed increased slowly up to around 110 mph for around a half-mile, then increased more and started actively attempting to elude me by weaving through cars," the affidavit states.
The trooper turned on his emergency lights and siren and pursued the vehicle. The trooper stopped chasing a short time later for safety reasons, but other troopers were setting up down the road.
About 15 minutes later, the Mustang was spotted again by another trooper, this time heading north on I-15.
"The vehicle was again blacked out and driving at a high rate of speed," according to the affidavit.
Near the Point of the Mountain, troopers successfully spiked the Mustang's tires, disabling the vehicle. The driver was arrested after pulling over without further incident. The Orem man was booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of two counts each of failing to stop for police, reckless driving, speeding over 100 mph and several driving infractions.
While questioning the man, he told troopers "he has fled from police probably 40 times," according to the affidavit.
