1 suspected dead in Cedar City fire, police say

CEDAR CITY — One person is suspected to have been killed in a fire that started Sunday afternoon in a trailer in Cedar City, police said.

Crews responded to the fire just after 12:30 p.m. near 1027 N. Main St. and found a trailer home fully engulfed in flames and spreading to a neighboring home, Cedar City police said in a news release.

Firefighters worked quickly to contain the fire's spread, police said, and several vehicles and neighboring properties were damaged in the fire.

"At this time, investigators believe there may be one deceased victim associated with the fire. Out of respect for the individual and their family, no identifying information will be released pending positive identification and notification of next of kin," police said.

They did not say whether the person was suspected to be in the trailer home where the fire started or a neighboring property.

Two officers were taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation "as a precaution" and later released.

The Cedar City Fire Department, Gold Cross Ambulance, Enoch City Police Department, Iron County Sheriff's Office, Utah Highway Patrol, and Southern Utah University Police Department aided in the response to provide traffic control, scene security, medical response, and operational support, police said.

Rocky Mountain Power disconnected power to the affected homes during the fire.

"We are grateful for the cooperation and patience shown by community members during the response and investigation," Cedar City police said in the release.

The state fire marshal is investigating.
