SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake police shot and injured a man while executing a search warrant early Friday.
Investigators obtained a search warrant for an apartment near 49 S. 800 East. Because the search was deemed to be "high risk," a SWAT team was used to serve it, said Salt Lake police spokesman Glen Mills. The warrant was to search for drugs and weapons.
About 12:15 a.m., during the execution of the warrant, an officer fired at least one shot at a man whose apartment was targeted to be searched, Mills said. No officers were injured. Officers gave medical care to the victim, who was then taken to a local hospital.
Mills says the shooting victim is expected to survive.
The person had an "extensive" criminal history that includes "aggravated assault, aggravated assault with bodily injury, reckless endangerment, failure to stop at the command of law enforcement and contributing to the delinquency of a minor," according to Mills.
The Unified Police Department is handling the police shooting investigation.
