KEARNS — Police are looking for two men in connection with a shooting in the Kearns area on Thursday that prompted three schools to go into a secure protocol.

About 1:30 p.m., Unified police received reports of shots fired in an outside area near 4100 West and 4850 South. Officers arrived to find an adult who was shot. That person was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Additional information about the victim, including whether the victim is a man or woman, was not immediately released.

Officers from multiple agencies, including K-9 officers and those with drones, searched the area for two men believed to be in their 20s. As of Thursday afternoon, the men had not been taken into custody.

The incident also prompted the Granite School District to initiate a "secure protocol" for West Kearns Elementary, David Gourley Elementary and Kearns Junior High. That meant all outside doors were locked and no one was allowed to enter or exit the schools. Classes, however, proceeded as usual inside.

A school district spokesman says this was done out of "an abundance of caution," and there was never a direct threat to any of the students or employees.

Police are now asking residents in the area to check their doorbell and surveillance cameras and contact officers if they find any activity that was recorded that may be related to the shooting.
