PARK CITY — A Riverton man is accused of stealing thousands of dollars' worth of items from a Deer Valley hotel, only to be arrested after his getaway vehicle got stuck in the snow.
Richard James Kearney, 57, was charged on March 3 in Summit County's 3rd District Court with four counts of theft, a second-degree felony, two third-degree felonies and a class B misdemeanor; and burglary, a third-degree felony.
On Feb. 18, about 1 a.m., Kearney went to the St. Regis Deer Valley hotel and stole various items, according to charging documents.
"Over the next six hours, Kearney moves through various parts of the hotel, taking items from each part of the hotel that he went through. Kearney removed wine from wine storage area, thousands of dollars of items from the spa area, took items from the front desk area as he moved throughout the hotel," a police booking affidavit adds.
Court documents further state that Kearney also took two sets of skis worth $1,500 each and a fold-up massage table. The total value of all the items taken was about $14,500, police stated.
Kearney then moved the stolen items to the parking garage and, after "multiple trips of moving property," loaded the items into his GMC Yukon, the charges state.
But when Kearny tried to drive away using an unmaintained access road, his vehicle became stuck in the snow, according to the charges. He walked away from the truck and returned several hours later in another vehicle, but was turned away at the security gate.
Park City police were notified on Feb. 20 that the Yukon was still stuck in the snow and employees looking into the windows could see many of the items stolen from the hotel, according to the affidavit.
Kearney was arrested on Feb. 27 after returning to the area.
