KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • Uintah High School won its third consecutive 4A state wrestling title Feb. 14.
  • Maddax Hacking, among five champions, highlighted Uintah's success at Utah Valley University.
  • Uintah has now secured 28 team titles, second only to Delta's 34 in Utah.

OREM — Maddax Hacking won a 4A state wrestling championship Saturday night for Uintah High, much like his father once did after following in his grandfather's footsteps.

Yes, in a multi-generational town Vernal, history repeated itself on Valentine's Day — except perhaps, in one way.

"It was my second, and my dad only won it once. I've been pushing towards being better than my dad and win it twice," Hacking said. "A lot of Hackings wrestled at Uintah."

Hacking finished off his second title at 132 pounds, one of five individual champions and eight finalists as the Utes rolled to a third consecutive 4A state title at the UCCU Center at Utah Valley University.

It's the 28th team title in Uintah wrestling history, the second-most in the state behind Delta's 34. For many wrestlers, it's a family affair.

That includes Hacking, whose brother Ryken won at 138 pounds to go along with Gavin Decol (106), Drayger Cloward (120) and Ethan Sharp (126), as well as three runners up.

"Vernal is a small town, and there are a lot of families that just stem off and a lot of wrestlers with family tradition," Hacking said. "It's the biggest sport in Vernal; everyone loves it."
