SALT LAKE CITY — There were 93 homicides in Utah during 2025, according to statistics compiled annually by KSL.com. Nearly 60% of the victims were shot to death.
Here is a look at each of the Utah homicide victims and how they were killed in 2025.


1, 2, 3.WEST VALLEY CITY, Jan. 1 — Terri Bertelsen, 63, and her husband Kerry Bertelsen, 67, were stabbed in their home, 3310 W. Enterado Ave., by their son, Erik Roland Bertelsen, 35, who had recently been released from the Utah State Prison and was experiencing a mental health crisis. Erik Bertelsen was shot and killed by West Valley police who found him in the act of stabbing his parents. Method: Stabbings; shooting Motive: Mental health, domestic; justified defense


4.RIVERTON, Jan. 3 — Tanner Merril Cottrell, 27, was shot by police after shooting at officers while leading them on a lengthy chase. Cottrell was wanted in connection with an arson-caused house fire on Jan. 1 at 2665 E. 2100 South. He was spotted Jan. 2 in Orem, and a chase with police ensued. The long pursuit went into North Salt Lake and all around Salt Lake County. Police say Cottrell fired at officers several times from his truck as he was fleeing. Police were able to spike Cottrell's tires. The chase ended when the truck crashed at 124000 S. Redwood, flipped and landed on its top. At that point, police say there was some kind of confrontation and Cottrell was shot and killed by officers from six agencies — Salt Lake, Taylorsville, Unified and West Valley police, plus the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office and Utah Highway Patrol. 5.SOUTH JORDAN, Jan. 3 — An unnamed 17-year-old boy was killed in a shootout with police. South Jordan police responded to reports of a vehicle theft near 9400 South and 4600 West. Officers arrived to find the teen in a vehicle. When police approached him, he "fired at officers, and officers returned fire." The boy ran off. Multiple agencies "flooded the area," and the gunman was found in a nearby backyard. "During the second interaction with the subject, more shots were fired," according to police. The teen, whose name hasn't been released, later died at a hospital. Method: Shooting Motive: Possible justified defense

6.MAGNA, Jan. 4 — Talia Benward, 31, was killed and her body dumped in a remote area of Tooele County. Her family reported her as missing two days earlier. Her body was found by Unified police with assistance from the K-9 teams. An autopsy determined Benward died from "asphyxiation and blunt force trauma." Her boyfriend, Nestor Oved Rocha-Aguayo, 24, of West Valley City, was located in Fillmore on a bus headed to Mexico. He is charged with aggravated murder, aggravated kidnapping and desecration of a dead body. Method: Beating, asphyxiation Motive: Unknown domestic

7.SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 9 — Chandler Grillone, 32, was shot by police in a bizarre confrontation during a traffic stop that he was not involved with. A Salt Lake police officer pulled over a vehicle near 375 South and 765 West about 1:40 a.m. on Jan. 8. While the officer was talking to the driver, Grillone walked up to the officer. During their interaction, Grillone makes several odd comments, such as, "This is a citizen's audit" and "What are you doing? This is not illegal," while pointing to the pickup that was pulled over, prompting the officer to respond, "What are you … talking about?" Grillone later jumped into the bed of the pickup that was pulled over and appears to be holding a knife. He then jumps out of the pickup truck and starts walking toward the passenger side of the officer's patrol car, where police say a community member who was doing a ride-along with the officer that night was still sitting. Grillone appears to point at her as he walks toward the car despite multiple orders to stop. The officer fired five times. Grillone died the next day. 8.CEDAR CITY, Jan. 17 — KayLee Dutton, 17, was shot while driving near the intersection of Midvalley Road and 4300 West, north of Cedar City. The girl's 18-year-old friend in the passenger seat was injured. Michael Edward Hess-Witacki and Ethan Andrew Galloway, both 23, are charged with murder. Two others were charged with obstruction of justice. The four men claimed that they thought the other vehicle was "stalking" them, so they pulled up next to it and fired a dozen rounds, according to police. 9.LAYTON, Jan. 28 — Crossing guard Steven Winn, 67, had just finished helping students cross Main Street to get to Vae View Elementary School at the 1600 North intersection when he was hit by a northbound car. "As the crossing guard was in the crosswalk, in the intersection, a car ran the red light and struck the crossing guard at speed without braking," according to charges. Kathleen Vicars, 75, is charged with negligent homicide. Method: Vehicle Alleged motive: Negligence

10.SANTA CLARA, Washington County, Jan. 29 — Heather Ann Barela, 44, was shot inside her home. Another male was shot in the shoulder but survived. Barela's 15-year-old son is charged with murder in juvenile court. The boy admitted to retrieving a firearm from a bedroom but stated that he had an out-of-body experience and recalled shooting the male victim, court documents state. A crime scene examination yielded four 9 mm shell casings in the same room where Heather Barela was found deceased. Method: Shooting Motive: Unknown domestic

11.KEARNS, Feb. 2 — Dylan Treichel, 23, was shot while allegedly trying to dodge a bullet. His friend Ashton Jonathon Mann, 23, is charged with manslaughter. Mann told police that Treichel "said he could dodge a bullet." Mann stated that he dry-fired his gun six or seven times while Dylan was doing the same thing. "Mann took the magazine out of his 9 mm gun, put it on the table and racked it. Mann stated that he never keeps a bullet in the chamber because he doesn't have a concealed carry permit. Mann stated that he and Dylan were 'dry firing' — 'messing around' — when a round went off," according to charges. Method: Shooting Alleged motive: Recklessness

12.CEDAR CITY, Feb. 12 — Cory Whittenburg, 45, was stabbed allegedly because of a dispute over dogs. Gerald Lee Vandermeer, 55, is charged with murder. Police say the two neighbors had not known each other very long. Whittenburg became angry at Vandermeer a couple of days before he was killed because of dogs running loose on his property near 4200 W. 6800 North. Vandermeer tried to smooth things over and went to Whittenburg's residence, but the two ended up fighting, and during the confrontation, Whittenburg was killed, police say. 13.OGDEN, Feb. 23 — Albert Gutierrez, 29, was run over by a car after allegedly being assaulted by three nightclub security guards who left him in the road. Martin Esparza Espinoza, 56, of Ogden, Jose Higinio Garcia-Jimenez, 54, of Salt Lake City, and Jeison F. Gomez-Diaz, 39, of Riverdale, were each charged with manslaughter. All three men were working as security guards at an unspecified nightclub in the 3500 block of Washington Boulevard. The trio got into a confrontation with a man who would not pay for tacos. As the man was trying to get away, Gomez-Diaz "continued to kick and strike at the victim" before two of the guards "pursued the victim into the middle lane of Washington Boulevard in the 3500 block where they continued the assault (him) and where the victim was left on the ground," according to charges. Less than one minute later, a car pulled out of a parking lot and ran over the male lying in the middle lane of Washington Boulevard. Method: Vehicle Alleged motive: Fight

14.PROVO, Feb. 23 — The remains of Lesa Molyneaux Hyde, 51, of Springville, were found in a shed at a four-plex. She had been reported missing on Dec. 26. Court documents list her death as the day she was found. Arthuro Aurelio Carrion, 53, of Provo, her ex-boyfriend, is charged with murder. The break for investigators came when Carrion told another man about the body, and that man called police. When officers arrived, they found a lock on the shed. When they asked Carrion if they would find anything in the shed, he stated, "a dead body." Hyde's body was found inside a black nylon bag in the shed. She "had her hands bound behind her back with black wire, and there was a black plastic bag over her head, pulled tight and with a thick strap wrapped tightly around her neck," charges state. 15.EAGLE MOUNTAIN, March 7 — Isla Trusty, 2 months, was found face down in a bathtub next to her mother, who had fallen asleep. Taylor Nichole Trusty, 24, is charged with manslaughter. Police say Trusty was taking a bath and took Isla in the bath with her because she was being fussy. She apparently fell asleep, however, and woke up three hours later to find her daughter dead. Trusty told police she had been drinking alcohol before and during her bath, and police noted there were cans and bottles on the bathroom floor. Method: Drowning Alleged motive: Negligence

16.WEST JORDAN, March 9 — Hugo Lucero Perez, 19, was shot in the chest three times outside a house near 7900 South and 6400 West following a house party. Tayden Bentley Huntsman, 19, is charged with murder. Police say Huntsman, a documented gang member, had gotten into an argument with Perez and shot him in the back after questioning Perez's gang loyalty. Huntsman had waited for Perez to leave the party and fired 11 rounds after Perez stepped outside, according to police. Vincent Caleb Vasquez, 18, was later charged with obstruction of justice for allegedly instructing Huntsman to throw his gun into a river and gathering money to help him flee. 17.MILLCREEK, March 9 — Dominik Philip, 29, was shot once at the Revolve Apartments, 764 W. 3940 South. Deng Martin Auling, 20, is charged with murder. Police believe Philip was drinking with friends in the apartment when Auling's gun went off and struck Philip. An autopsy determined it was a contact wound to the back. After he was shot, the friends took 20 minutes before calling 911, and Auling originally told others that Philip had shot himself, charges state. Method: Shooting Alleged motive: Negligence

18.MAGNA, March 17 — Giovanni Valenzuela, 1 month, was taken to a local hospital after possibly suffering a full arrest. Doctors, however, found broken ribs in various stages of healing. The injuries were likely caused by "infant shaking, forceful impact and similar forceful handling," according to police. Giovanni died three days after arriving at the hospital. His father, Armando Valenzuela, 25, is charged with murder. Method: Abuse Alleged motive: Child abuse, domestic
19.COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, March 19 — Winona Parks, 77, died after being abused and neglected by her caretaker, police say. Lori Meers, 53, is charged with manslaughter and aggravated abuse of a vulnerable adult. A woman went to visit her twin sister, who prosecutors say "was nonverbal and had dementia," and found her on the floor covered in feces. Doctors determined Parks was in "poor medical physical shape" and was diagnosed with "severe sepsis with septic shock, skin sores, pancreatitis (and) transaminitis" in addition to other injuries to her hips and legs, and she died nine days later, charges state. 20.WASHINGTON, Washington County, March 22 — Andreea Mottram, 47, was stabbed 14 times in an upstairs bedroom of a rental property, 1209 Bello Aly. Her body was found the next day by a cleaning crew. Abigael Paige Flanagan, 17, who also goes by the name "Jay," and Mihaela Gabriela Sorescu, 16, who also goes by the name "Bella" and is Mottram's daughter, were arrested in California and both charged with murder. Sorescu had been in a residential treatment program for the past three years leading up to the killing and Flanagan for at least a year. Sorescu's diary was seized by police who say there was an entry in which she "indicated how much she hated her mother and wrote that she wanted to kill her," according to charges. 21.RIVERDALE, March 24 — Mayra Catalan-Dimas, 23, was found unresponsive inside a trailer home at 1050 W. 5100 South after the home had caught fire. Police say a puncture wound was found in Catalan-Dimas' neck and determined her death to be a homicide and the fire was arson. An Amber Alert was issued for Catalan-Dimas' two children, ages 2 and 3, after her body was found. Ricardo Trujillo Rojel, 29, the siblings' father, was found in Hobble Creek Canyon and charged with murder. The children were found safe with their father. 22, 23.SARATOGA SPRINGS, March 28 — Eli Painter, 8, and his mother, Jessica Orton Lyman, 44, were found shot in the head inside their home, 1244 N. Willowbrook Lane. Eli was pronounced dead at the scene. Lyman died a couple of days later. Lyman's 15-year-old son and 17-year-old daughter were in the house when police arrived. The girl made the initial call to police after finding her mother and brother lying on the floor of the mother's bedroom. The son said he was asleep through the incident. Despite search warrants served early in the investigation that seemed to indicate some resistance from family members in being interviewed by police, as well as potential evidence found in the son's room, Saratoga Springs police say the family has been cooperating. Police have remained tight-lipped about the investigation since the beginning and have not said which family members they've interviewed, whether they have any suspects in the case, or when the investigation might be completed. 24.OGDEN, April 2 — Nakeena Youngman, 40, of Salt Lake City, was found lying in the road near 450 E. 800 North in Ogden with a gunshot wound to her chest. Youngman was taken to a hospital but later died from her injuries. Ana María Zaragoza, 37, is charged with murder. The two women had been arguing, and Zaragoza said she went to her car to get a gun, then shot Youngman, a mother of six, after Youngman threatened her, court documents say. After the shooting, Zaragoza purchased a plane ticket for Mexico but missed the flight for an unknown reason. She was arrested for an unrelated incident April 13. Investigators say the car she was driving at the time of her arrest matched the suspect vehicle from the fatal shooting. Method: Shooting Alleged motive: Fight

25.OGDEN, April 4 — Nicholas Trujillo, 37, was shot 15 times by members of the Ogden Metro Gang task force. Police went to Motel 6, 1206 W. 21st Street, about 2 a.m. in an attempt to arrest Trujillo, who was wanted in connection with an aggravated robbery. Ogden police said Trujillo was a known white supremacist gang member with an extensive criminal history. Police say Trujillo ran when task force members approached him, and then pointed a loaded gun at officers as he ran, prompting two task force members to shoot. The Weber County attorney determined the officers' actions were legally justified. Method: Shooting Motive: Justified defense
26.SPRINGVILLE, April 5 — An unidentified man was shot by Springville police officers who were responding to a domestic violence call. Police were called to 180 S. 300 West on a report from neighbors of a woman screaming and crying. Officers confronted the man, who was shot and killed after allegedly stabbing one of the officers. That officer was treated at a local hospital. Springville police have not released the man's identity. Method: Shooting Motive: Possible justified defense


27, 28.SALT LAKE CITY, April 15 — Phillip Kioa, 40, and Sofeni Heimuli, 36, were found shot inside a hotel room. A man who was renting a room at the Comfort Inn Downtown, 171 W. 500 South, had hired an escort to come to his room, but then got into a pay dispute with the woman. The woman called Kioa and Heimuli for "protection," according to charges. A short time later, Kioa and Heimuli knocked on the man's door claiming they were "security." The man refused to open the door. When he later opened the door, two men with ski masks rushed into the room. One man put a gun to his face, pistol-whipped him, and punched him, telling the man to "make it right," charges say. The man told police he feared for his life, grabbed a gun on the floor and shot the two men. Four people, including the escort, were charged with obstruction of justice and other crimes. The Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office declined to file any charges against the gunman. Method: Shooting Motive: Self-defense
29.FARMINGTON, April 21 — An unidentified man was shot by Farmington police after officers were called to a possible domestic violence situation. Police were called just before 2 a.m. to the area of Lupine Way and Foxglove Road on a report of a man "holding a pistol to a woman's head." The first-arriving officers found a man and woman outside the residence, and the man was armed with a handgun, police said. "Officers gave multiple commands to drop the weapon, but he refused to do so. One officer fired his weapon, striking the male," according to police. But Farmington police won't identify the victim. 30.SOUTH SALT LAKE, April 26 — Malachi Senshaw, 18, of Salt Lake City, was shot at 2531 S. 400 East. Salman Farhan Ahmed, 22, is charged with aggravated murder. Ahmed and Senshaw were in a car with two women when Ahmed got into an argument with one of the women, "pulled the gun out, pointed it at her inches from her head and told her, 'I'm gonna kill you,'" charges say. When the woman got out of the car, Senshaw tried to help and stood between the woman and Ahmed with his back to Ahmed and was shot. Police say Ahmed then drove away. Ahmed was charged with murder in a 2022 gang-related shooting of Talib "Kunda" Ahmed, 18. But because of evidence issues, prosecutors allowed him to plead guilty to lesser charges of illegal discharge of a firearm and being a restricted person in possession of a weapon. 31.PLEASANT GROVE, April 29 — Dalton Gibbs, 9, was riding his bicycle and crossing 2600 North at 900 West in Pleasant Grove, not far from his home, when he was hit by a Chevy pickup truck turning right onto westbound 2600 North. George Parker Hunter, 80, of Cedar Hills, is charged with manslaughter. Dalton was dragged about 50 feet before becoming dislodged from the vehicle. Hunter "drove away with (Dalton's) bicycle still trapped beneath his truck," charging documents state. When Hunter was later located at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds, he allegedly claimed that he believed the car in front of him had hit the bicycle first. "I knew I hit a bicycle, but I didn't think there was a kid on it," Hunter said, according to the charges. Method: Vehicle Alleged motive: Negligence
32.LEHI, May 3 — A woman, only identified by her initials K.L., was killed in a motorcycle crash. Justin Kimball Strickland, 31, of Tooele, is charged with murder, reckless driving and DUI. Strickland was driving his motorcycle on Redwood Road with his girlfriend sitting behind him when he collided into the back of a stopped vehicle, throwing him and the girlfriend from the motorcycle, charges say. The woman died two days later. Investigators say Strickland was traveling over 78 mph on a 50-mph road, had a blood-alcohol level of .077% two hours after he crashed, and had been driving fast and filtering before the crash. 33.OREM, May 5 — Jesse Anderson, 24, was shot by police while the Major Crimes Task Force was serving a search warrant near 400 North and 800 East. The task force had been investigating another man for several weeks for drug distribution out of the residence. That man was pulled over and arrested earlier that evening. Deputies returned to the home after the arrest to serve the warrant. Once inside, they "encountered a male that was not complying with the orders of (police). During this confrontation, shots were fired by law enforcement and a loaded handgun was recovered from (the) floor next to the male who had been shot," the Utah County Sheriff's Office said. 34.DUCHESNE, May 10 — An unidentified woman was shot by police after they say she pointed a gun at a deputy. The incident happened after the Duchesne County Sheriff's Office responded to a domestic violence incident. While deputies were trying to contact the woman, they say "she opened the door holding a handgun." Deputies ordered the woman to drop the weapon, but the sheriff's office said she raised the gun and pointed it at one of them. The woman was shot in the chest. Her name has not been released. Method: Shooting Motive: Possible justified self-defense.

35.RIVERDALE, May 15 — Stacey Nicole Scott, 33, was found with multiple stab wounds at the Greenhill Apartments, 4189 S. 300 West. Scott Myers, 39, who was previously in a relationship with the woman, is charged with murder. Police say Scott and a man had gone to Myers' apartment, and while there, the man reported hearing a commotion and seeing Myers on top of the victim, stabbing her. He said he tried to intervene, but Myers swiped at him with the knife. Method: Stabbing Motive: Unknown domestic
36.KEARNS, May 18 — A 17-year-old boy, only identified as T.V., was shot in the Kearns High parking lot in a confrontation that apparently started as an attempt to rob a man of bottles of champagne. The shootout between the champagne seller and would-be robbers occurred at 1:49 a.m. at the high school, 5525 S. Cougar Lane. An 18-year-old man arrived in the parking lot to sell the champagne when a vehicle arrived with T.V and three other people inside. Police say two males with guns got out of the car, prompting the seller to grab his own gun and start shooting at the two gunmen. He continued shooting as he ran away and flagged down police. A total of 26 shell casings were recovered. Tesfaye Mebratu Shabi, 18, Brandon Ray Hollins, 18, and a 17-year-old boy who were all in the car with the victim are charged with aggravated robbery. The 18-year-old seller was not arrested. Method: Shooting Motive: Self-defense

37.SOUTH SALT LAKE, May 21 — Timothy Clark McCallum, 56, of South Salt Lake, was shot at his apartment, 898 W. Timbercreek Way. Michael Lynn Angus, 50, Brandon David Murphy, 29, Noah Brady Angus, 27, and Sheraya Lyn Ridgway, 30, are each charged with murder. Police say Michael Angus wanted to buy meth and had another person go to McCallum's apartment to buy the drugs from another man who had been staying there. After later determining the drugs were bad, the defendants are accused of going to the apartment to confront the seller. When McCallum answered the door, he was shot in the eye. "Murphy escalated the situation by taking a gun and pulling it on the victim, who had nothing to do with the drug deal," charges say. Method: Shooting Alleged motive: Drugs, mistaken identity

38.MIDVALE, May 23 — Dustin Steven Pearson, 32, of West Jordan, was shot by police during a confrontation. Officers responded to a report of an armed robbery about 2:20 a.m. near 165 W. 7200 South, the parking lot of a Sportsman's Warehouse. As officers arrived, they encountered Pearson. He began walking toward officers with a knife raised up in his hand and continued walking toward them, even after two Tasers were deployed and he was ordered to drop the knife, the district attorney said. He was shot 11 times and died at the scene. Sgt. Zack Young and officers Hunter Monsen and Josh Rowell were found to be legally justified in shooting him. 39.SALT LAKE CITY, May 27 — Christian Thomas Allen, 60, was shot by police responding to a report of domestic violence. Allen broke into his ex-wife's home near 3000 South and Judith Street. She had a protective order against him and called 911 about 12:15 a.m. after locking herself in a bedroom with her two children, ages 15 and 17. Body camera videos show that as soon as responding officers entered the home, they found Allen holding a large knife. Police gave him several commands at gunpoint to drop the knife. Instead, Allen can be seen putting his head down and walking toward the officers, who then fire more than a half-dozen rounds. Allen is seen falling to the ground while still holding the knife. Two officers were placed on paid leave. Method: Shooting Motive: Possible justified self-defense
40.TOOELE, June 8 — Hendrik Slok, 54, was stabbed outside a home at 96 N. 100 East. Isaac Daniel Gary Smith, 21, of Tooele, called 911 and claimed Slok, his mother's friend, attacked him and that he then stabbed the man in the neck, face and head in self-defense, according to police. Slok had been at the house earlier that day and called Smith's mother to ask if he could return to the home to get his wallet. The woman, who wasn't home, said yes and then called her son. She said she specifically told her son not to cause any problems with Slok because she was concerned about Smith's alleged mental illness, court documents allege. But when the victim came over, Smith said Slok was "acting shady" before he stabbed him multiple times, charges state. Smith is charged with murder. 41.ANETH, San Juan County, June 11 — Winston Billie was shot on the Navajo Nation. Chevel Cottonwood, 34, was charged in federal court with murder. Navajo police received a call reporting gunfire near the Hovenweep area north of Aneth just before 5:30 a.m. Officers were directed by a woman to a second location where they found Billie's body and his girlfriend. The woman said she was trying to sleep when she heard two gunshots from the living room about 4 a.m. She said Billie then came into her room and told her he did not know why Cottonwood was acting the way he was, then returned to the living room and started arguing with Cottonwood, court documents say. The woman said she heard another gunshot, saw the flash of the discharge and saw Billie lying on the floor bleeding. Method: Shooting Alleged motive: Fight

42.SALT LAKE CITY, June 14 — Arthur "Afa" Folasa Ah Loo, 39, was shot while peacefully marching at the No Kings protest in Salt Lake City. Matt Scott Alder, 43, of Murray, is charged with manslaughter. Alder saw Arturo Roberto Gamboa, 24, assembling and then carrying an AR-15 into the crowd of marchers, according to prosecutors. Apparently believing Gamboa was about to commit a mass shooting, police say Alder fired three rounds into the crowd. One shot hit and injured Gamboa, but another hit and killed Ah Loo. Prosecutors filed no charges against Gamboa, citing Utah's liberal open carry laws. Alder was not charged for shooting Gamboa as prosecutors determined those shots fell under the state's self-defense statute. Method: Shooting Alleged motive: Recklessness

43, 44, 45, 46.WEST VALLEY CITY, June 15 — Fnu Reena, 41, of West Jordan, and her unborn child;Hassan Lugundi, 18, of West Valley City; and 8-month-old Anderson Garcia Cabrera Jr. were shot while attending West Fest at Centennial Park, 5405 W. 3100 South. A 17-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy were also shot in the arms. Matthiaz Centre Lauti Ioane-Register, 16, is charged as an adult with four counts of aggravated murder. Police say he had an ongoing dispute with Lugundi, pulled out a handgun and started shooting at Lugundi, who was hit five times. Prosecutors say Ioane-Register is a known gang member and Lugundi was a friend of members of a rival gang. Charges say when informed that Lugundi had died, Ioane-Register "laughed and smiled." Investigators say Lee "stands up, tells his wife to call 911, proceeds to manipulate and remove a magazine from at least one pistol, and then puts the guns away without checking on (McBride)," and then gives his stepson a blessing before performing CPR. Dispatchers traced the call to the 1400 block of Washington Boulevard. Alec Martinez eventually got on the line and told dispatch, 'I think I killed my mom," charges say. Finau, according to witnesses, was "walking down a hallway pointing two handguns — one in each hand — at the victim, who was retreating, walking backward with his hands raised. 50.TOOELE, June 20 — Salvador Conejo-Pedraza, 50, of West Wendover, was reported missing on June 20. His remains were found July 10 in a remote area near Silver Island Loop Road in "an advanced state of decomposition," police say, and he had been shot with more than one kind of gun. Geoffry Wells Goldsborough, 48, is charged with murder. Deputies discovered Conejo-Pedraza's abandoned vehicle about six minutes north of where his remains would be found. While checking on the vehicle, emergency crews spotted Goldsborough and learned that he had recently quit his job and was planning on moving back to Wyoming. A co-worker told police Goldsborough had recently talked about carjacking someone so he could get back to Evanston and he asked the co-worker if he knew how to "hotwire" a vehicle, charges say. The man was being investigated for aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated rape, according to the Utah County Sheriff's Office. "Due to the level of violence displayed by the suspect," a search warrant was obtained, and a SWAT team was called to serve it. When the SWAT team entered the residence, they reported finding the man armed with a gun. 52.WHITEROCKS, Uintah County, June 26 — An unidentified Vernal man was shot in the neck with an arrow. Leroy Casper Poowegup Reed, a member of the Ute Indian Tribe, is charged in federal court with murder. Reed allegedly told investigators that when the victim approached his residence, the victim claimed he had killed Reed's son. "Reed stated the white guy looked like a serial killer in his green Army outfit," according to the charges. "Reed stated he was standing on his property when he shot the white guy with his bow and arrow." Investigators found out that Reed's son was fine and had been with his mother the entire time. Surveillance video shows the victim walking toward Reed's house and putting his hands up when Reed walks across the driveway with a bow and arrow drawn, prosecutors say. 53.HYRUM, Cache County, June 29 — Holly Andrade, 45, was stabbed to death by her husband, who then died after his home exploded, police say. Jorge Andrade, 45, stabbed her multiple times inside their home at the Valley View Mobile Home Park, 560 Valley View Drive, and then called his sister and told her he "was waiting to engage police at his residence," according to prosecutors. Jorge Andrade then exchanged shots with SWAT officers who were called to the scene, and during the subsequent standoff sent pictures of his bomb vest and what appeared to be explosives inside the house, according to police. 54.TAYLORSVILLE, July 5 — Luis Ramirez, 44, was knocked out during a fight and then killed when his attackers ran over him as they were leaving, police say. Miguel Angel Rivera, 34, of Sandy, is charged with murder. Juan Jose Perez Rivera, 36, of Woods Cross, is charged with aggravated assault and obstruction of justice. About 2 a.m., three men showed up at a residence near 1600 West and 5000 South, where there had been a Fourth of July party. The men were told the party was over and weren't allowed in. A short time later, one of the men threw a full beer can through the front window. That prompted several people from the house to go outside and confront the others. Ramirez, who had been in the home, threw a rock through one of the windows of the car the three men arrived in, which led to a fight between Ramirez and Perez, charges state. Ramirez "was punched and knocked to the ground unconscious by Perez Rivera, who continued to punch the victim as he lay unconscious," according to charges. The family had moved to Utah from Venezuela about two years earlier in search of a better life. Police said they had responded to the home once before on a domestic violence call. Police say Damon Rushton and his brother lived in the basement of the home. The three were drinking and began fighting, according to police. 61.MURRAY, July 31 — Kimberley Jean Jespersen, 53, was in a crosswalk at 4500 S. State when she was hit by a Chevrolet hatchback. That collision was minor. But as the driver and Jespersen were talking, a dark truck approached, and the driver narrowly missed the hatchback but struck Jespersen, who later died at a hospital, police say. Nathan Michael Portillo, 24, of Magna, is charged with murder. Investigators determined Portillo was traveling 55 mph prior to the crash. 64, 65.TREMONTON, Aug. 17 — Tremonton-Garland Police Sgt. Lee Sorensen, 56, and officer Eric Estrada, 31, were shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call. Police say Ryan Michael Bate, 32, had assaulted his wife and threatened to kill her. One of the officers arrived at 705 N. 200 East to investigate a 911 hangup call. The wife said there had been no physical violence, and the officer began to drive away when a shot was fired at him from a high-powered rifle. He parked, called for backup and got out of the car when the wife ran down the street yelling that her husband had a gun, charges say. As that officer tried to cross the street to help the wife, he was shot. The second officer was shot while trying to help his colleague who was lying in the road. Box Elder County sheriff's deputy Mike Allred and a K-9 were also shot and injured while taking cover, and Allred was able to direct other responding officers away from the line of fire. 66.OGDEN, Aug. 31 — Jesus Cuadras, 22, of Ogden, was shot during an illegal street racing event near 9350 W. 900 South in Weber County. Michael Robles Gaisbauer, 18, of Perry, Box Elder County, and Christian Elias Antonio Ruiz, 17, are charged with murder. A 15-year-old boy is also charged in juvenile court with murder. Police say Gaisbauer fired a rifle eight times toward a crowd in response to an uproar caused by two females who were fighting, and Cuadras was hit in the head. Outside temperatures reached 95 degrees by the afternoon, with interior vehicle temperatures likely exceeding 130 degrees, charges state. 68.WEST JORDAN, Sept. 2 — Elhelbawy Adam Idrees, 26, was shot by multiple officers following an hourlong standoff. Police were called to 1889 W. 7265 South after receiving reports of an argument between several people, one of whom had a gun. Five people were initially in the house when officers arrived. Four were able to get out safely during the ensuing standoff as police attempted to negotiate with Elhelbawy, who remained inside. About four hours after the initial call, SWAT team members entered the house after obtaining a search warrant. Contact was made with Elhelbawy, and shots were fired. 69.TOOELE, Sept. 3 — An unidentified woman died after purchasing fentanyl pills and overdosing. Dedrian Diviano Tybo Oppenhein, 26, was charged with manslaughter. Police say the victim and her boyfriend arranged to buy fentanyl pills from Oppenhein on social media, and when they got home from the deal, they smoked some of their pills and fell asleep. When the boyfriend woke up, he found the woman unconscious on the bathroom floor and that the rest of the pills had been smoked. 70.SALT LAKE CITY, Sept. 6 — Usman Dalal, 20, was shot after two groups got into a fight at a house party near 1300 E. Wilson Ave. Cesar Gonzalez Juarez, 24, of Stansbury Park, is charged with murder. Police say Dalal was walking to a party with friends when several people in a car drove by, and words were exchanged. Gonzalez got out of the vehicle, and a fight ensued. When Gonzalez was punched and knocked to the ground, he got up, pulled out a handgun and fired it, charges say. As Dalal was running away, police say another person in the vehicle tackled the victim, and punched and kicked him. 71.VERNAL, Sept. 7 — An unidentified 3-year-old boy died from blunt force injuries while being watched by a caretaker. Angela Accuttoroop, 50, is charged with child abuse homicide. She "acknowledged becoming frustrated with the child's behaviors and admitted she was not equipped to take on the care of the child," court documents say. 72.OREM, Sept. 10 — Political activist Charlie Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck while sitting under a tent of an outdoor amphitheater-courtyard area at Utah Valley University speaking in front of approximately 3,000 people. Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was at UVU as part of his "Prove Me Wrong" tour. Police say the shooter was on the roof of the nearby Losee Center building about 175 to 200 yards away. Tyler James Robinson, 22, of Washington, Washington County, is charged with capital murder. Prosecutors have already said they will seek the death penalty if Robinson is convicted. Kirk's death sparked an intense manhunt, and his death drew strong criticism from conservative lawmakers across the nation, including President Donald Trump. He was Ruthenberg's roommate, and the two "had not been getting along with each other, and there had been recent threats made by Bynum," charges state. On the night Ruthenberg was killed, police say Bynum went down to the office to get staff members because Ruthenberg was talking on his phone after hours. 76.OGDEN, Oct. 7 — Ben Lomond High student Mason Caballero, 16, was shot near the school. Police found 22 fired casings. Isaias Emanuel Carranza, a 16-year-old Ogden High student, is charged as an adult with aggravated murder. 77.SANDY, Oct. 13 — Joshua Pectol, 39, of Sandy, was shot near Main Street Park, 8720 S. 60 East, while accompanying his son to a drug deal. Matthew Lee Bowman, 16, of Erda, is charged with murder. Two other teen boys were also arrested. Police say Pectol's 14-year-old son agreed to sell 15 THC cartridges for $370 to someone who contacted him on social media. The teen told his father about the plan and said the messages were "sketchy," so Pectol agreed to go with his son and also brought his gun with him, charges state. When the vehicle with the alleged buyers arrived, the teen walked up to the car and reported seeing men wearing ski masks. At that point, Pectol, who was hiding nearby, walked up to the car and told the occupants, "Nah, we're not going to do this," and then "racked the slide of his own handgun," according to charges. 78.OGDEN, Oct. 18 — Chanelle Alvarez, 15, of Ogden, was shot in the head at close range in her home. Her boyfriend, Hezekiah Plummer, 16, of Clearfield, is charged as an adult with murder. A resident awoke to gunfire and saw Plummer coming up the stairs with a gun in his hand, charges say. Plummer allegedly said someone had tried to rob them, then he left the house. 79.WEST VALLEY CITY, Oct. 25 — Allen Montelongo, 18, of Salt Lake City, was shot after police say he fired first at a group standing outside a Halloween party. Montelongo was driving in the 4700 block of Palmer Drive when police say he fired at a group of teenagers and young adults standing in the roadway. A 16-year-old male from Sandy was shot multiple times but survived. A 17-year-old boy returned fire and struck Montelongo. 80.PROVO, Oct. 28 — Claudia Isela Sandoval Martinez, 2, was hit while riding her tricycle in front of her home. Nereyda Yessenia Miranda Montano, 28, is charged with manslaughter. Montano left her home in the Brough Trailer Court, 860 W. Columbia Lane, "and placed two grocery store bags full of trash on the hood of her car. The dumpster for the mobile home park where she lived was at the exit of the park, and she intended to throw the trash away before continuing to the street," charges state. The bags were allegedly placed on the driver's side of the car in front of the windshield "such that they partially obstructed her view." Police say she hit two children while driving. 81.SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 29 — Jose Hernandez, 47, was shot by a Salt Lake police officer after he allegedly threw a rock at two officers at the corner of 2100 South and 300 West. In body camera video, an officer investigating an attack is speaking with Hernandez, who is sitting on a curb. The officer offers Hernandez medical attention, which he declines. Hernandez is seen in the video gathering landscaping rocks from behind the curb where he is sitting and putting them into the front pocket of his sweatshirt. He then stands up and backs away from the officer as he takes one of the rocks out of his pocket and holds it, the video shows. Hernandez then turns and walks away from the officers along 300 West. Police tell Hernandez to stop and put the rock down, but he darts into traffic. As Hernandez reaches the northwest corner of the intersection, he is seen turning and throwing the rock at one of the pursuing officers. The officer fires at least one round, hitting Hernandez. 82, 83.WEST VALLEY CITY, Oct. 31 — Javen Ryan "Bug" Welcher and a girl only identified by her initials, F. A-R., both 17, were shot outside a Halloween party. Yonis A. Muktar, 19, of Taylorsville; Nuur Abdikadier Aden, 22, of West Valley City; and Justin Xavier Trujillo, 18, of Holladay, are each charged with two counts of murder. Police say a fight occurred inside a residence near 2600 West and Westshire Drive and spilled into the street. When the victims decided to leave in a black SUV, they pulled up next to a Mercedes. Muktar, who witnesses say had issues with some of the people in the SUV, peeked into the SUV and ran off, charges say. Police say Muktar felt threatened and had called Aden and Trujillo to come help him. "Video surveillance shows a white Hyundai open fire on the black Ford (SUV) and Aden run up behind ... firing a rifle," according to charges. GEORGE, Nov. 17 — Daniel Jack Monfore, 33, of St. George, was riding his motorcycle when he was hit head-on by a Washington County sheriff's patrol vehicle that was responding to another incident. Silafia Clyde Brown, 49, was charged with manslaughter. Brown was responding in a marked patrol car to a crash on Old Highway 91 west of St. George about 3:30 p.m. with his emergency equipment activated when he hit Monfore. Redwood, when she was hit by a driver who police say may have been racing another vehicle. Emmanuel Flores-Hernandez, 30, of Riverton, is charged with manslaughter. Police say he was traveling 107 mph less than two seconds before the crash and hit McGeary at 82 mph on the 40 mph road and may have been racing another vehicle at the time. Jose Angel Torres Jimenez, 21, is charged with two counts of murder. Police say the series of events began when Jimenez hit his 17-year-old girlfriend with his car in the parking garage of the DoubleTree, 110 W. 600 South. He then allegedly fled and entered I-15 the wrong way on the 600 South off-ramp. Jimenez is accused of hitting Wilson and Shepherd head-on near 2100 South. Torres was traveling 120 mph just before the crash and did not have a valid license, charges state. Police say his blood-alcohol level was more than double the legal limit when he first hit a cement barrier and then "pushed down on his throttle at 100% and continued down the road, where he hit" Wilson and Shepherd. 88.ST. GEORGE, Dec. 5 — Police say Jason Phillipe Quiroz, 17, of St. George, was shot and killed by his friend at 449 E. 1100 South. Malachi Robles, 19, of Washington, Washington County, is charged with manslaughter. Robles allegedly told police he had gotten the gun from someone else and believed it was stolen. He said while removing the loaded magazine from the gun, he "pulled the trigger in the process," firing a single round that struck Quiroz, according to court documents. 89.SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 14 — Steve Gus Kallas, 58, was shot outside his RV on the east side of a Smith's grocery store between the sidewalk and park strip at 2131 S. Lincoln Street. Nathaniel Douglas Stockton, 36, is charged with aggravated murder. Police say Kallas owed Stockton money due to a drug debt. 91.WEST VALLEY CITY, Dec. 25 — Police say Jose Alejandro Franco-Alvarez, 45, was stabbed near 4500 West and 3935 South by his girlfriend. Fabiola Lara Templos, 39, of Kearns, is charged with manslaughter. Police were called on a report that Franco-Alvarez had tried to sexually assault Templos' young daughter. Templos' son reported seeing him touching the child's leg, but Franco-Alvarez ran off before police arrived. 92.SOUTH JORDAN, Dec. 27 — Alexander Powell, 34, was shot multiple times at 11536 S. Copper Stone Drive during a holiday party. Zachary Gage Prescott, 25, of Taylorsville, and Kevin Charles Scarbourough, 38, of Kearns, are charged with murder. Scarbourough punched Powell multiple times after an argument "over gang-related matters" escalated, police say. While the three were in the backyard, Scarbourough told Prescott to shoot Powell, "but Prescott said he didn't want to go to prison. Scarbourough raised his voice and told Prescott to shoot the victim. Prescott then fired the gun twice, striking the victim in the abdomen," charges state. 93.HERRIMAN, Dec. 28 — Kevin Van Beuge, 60, of Herriman, was shot twice while buying car parts and his body was then dumped in a shallow grave. Police say Jeffrey Mauricio Lopez, 32, of Taylorsville, lured Van Beuge to his auto shop under the guise of selling him parts, then shot him and buried his body in Tooele County. He is charged with murder. Nine minutes after gunshots were heard, a $2,500 Venmo transaction from Van Beuge's account was sent to Lopez, charges state. Investigators believe Lopez drove a truck with Van Beuge's body in the back to several counties and tried to withdraw money from the victim's bank cards.
