SALT LAKE CITY — Two people were killed after a wrong-way driver crashed head-on into their vehicle on I-15 early Saturday.

A gray Audi was driving south in the northbound lanes on I-15, starting around 600 South, when it crashed into a Nissan Rogue around 1900 South, Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Luis Silva said. The crash occurred about 2 a.m. Saturday.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle received injuries not considered to be life-threatening, but the two occupants of the other car were killed, Silva said.

The victims have been identified as 18-year-old Leo Shepherd and 17-year-old Anneka Wilson.

Family members describe Wilson as someone who built her life around helping others, reflected by her work in an elder-care home. Shepherd is remembered as big-hearted, with "teddy-bear kindness," and loved being an uncle.

Although the families declined on-camera interviews with KSL-TV, they shared heartfelt tributes on social media.

Hallister Wilson, Anneka's brother, wrote, "Anneka was the best sister you could ask for and one of the best humans to be around. Always giving out unconditional love to anyone and everyone, whether she knew you or not. She loved taking care of others. She was kind, compassionate, loving and so much fun to be around."

Shantelle Shepherd-Hansen, Leo's sister, shared, "Leo had a heart of gold and loved fiercely. Anneka was pure warmth, beauty, and kindness. It brings me the smallest bit of comfort knowing they left this world side by side, the same way they lived."

Pleasant Creek School posted on Facebook Saturday afternoon, notifying the Sanpete community that "one of our own graduates" had died.

A GoFundMe* set up for Wilson by a family member said she was a loving and caring person who loved turquoise jewelry, art and was a "true traditional cowgirl at heart."

"Her warmth touched everyone she met. She was known for her stubborn spirit, her zest for life, and her joy in living every moment to the fullest," the fundraiser said. "Tragically, Anneka's boyfriend Leo passed away with her. Leo will be remembered for his love and the special bond they shared. Their memories and love will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew them."

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle, identified as 21-year-old Jose Jimenez, was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence, Silva added.

Troopers also stopped another wrong-way driver in the same area a few hours later, who was also arrested for investigation of driving under the influence.

Meanwhile, northbound I-15 near the I-80 interchange was closed for several hours Saturday morning while northbound traffic was diverted onto a collector ramp. By noon, the scene had been cleared and roads were reopened.
