Locals in the NFL: East High alum Jaylen Warren is hurdling up Steelers' depth chart

Save Story

AROUND THE SHIELD — There were plenty of questions who would replace the production of Najee Harris in Pittsburgh's backfield when the running back left the Steelers after four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.

The answer came right out of Salt Lake City.

Former East High star Jaylen Warren has been climbing over expectations — some might even say, hurdling them — since he was given his time to shine with the Steelers.

The one-time Snow College and Utah State running back who finished his college career at Oklahoma State ran for 404 yards and two touchdowns on 99 carries in the first seven games of the 2025 season.

His two-touchdown performance in a 27-20 win over the Colts last week signaled more usage for Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who put Warren in the starting lineup Sunday night against the Los Angeles Chargers.

And Warren did not disappoint, rushing for 70 yards on 14 carries, and adding two catches for 21 yards including an 18-yard catch-and-run in a 25-10 loss to the Chargers.

Most impressive might have been Warren's third-quarter hurdle that brought Pittsburgh (5-4) from the shadow of their own end zone past the 20-yard line.

It also left veteran NBC broadcasters Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth speechless.

"He did not break stride," Collinsworth said, narrating the leap that elicited an "Oh, baby!" from his broadcaster partner.

"There is an element of danger to that play," he added.

Warren, the former undrafted free agent who signed a three-year deal in the offseason, wasn't the only standout player from a Utah high school or college in Week 10 of the 2025 NFL regular season.

Here's a look at others, including touchdown catches by former BYU and Orem High standout Puka Nacua in the Rams' 42-26 win over the 49ers and Bingham High alum Dalton Schultz's score in Houston's 36-29 win over Jacksonville.
