SALT LAKE CITY — It's municipal primary Election Day in Utah, meaning voters have until this evening to return mailed ballots or vote in person to weigh in on future local leaders.
Thanks to a newly enacted state law, all ballots must be in the hands of county clerks by 8 p.m. Tuesday to be counted, so it's already too late to return ballots in the mail. Drop boxes and in-person polling places can be found on county clerk websites or at vote.utah.gov. Drop boxes will remain open until polls close at 8 p.m.
"Today is a great day to participate in our democracy," the state Elections Office said on X. "Be sure to check your local jurisdiction to see what's on the ballot and if there's an election happening in your area. Every vote counts!"
Races for most city and local offices are held in odd years, though not every city or elected office will hold a primary ahead of the general election on Nov. 4. Salt Lake City, South Salt Lake, Midvale and Millcreek have all opted to use ranked-choice voting and are not participating in the primaries. Some other races do not necessitate a primary because only a couple of candidates filed to run.
