SALT LAKE CITY — A 31-year-old man in a stolen truck was arrested at gunpoint on Thursday in Salt Lake City after he rammed two police cars in an attempt to escape, including one that he allegedly attempted to drive over, according to law enforcers.
Tyler William Riding was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of two counts of assault on an officer, having a stolen vehicle, theft by deception, failing to stop for police, causing property damage, driving on a suspended license and failing to wear his seat belt.
Thursday afternoon, two agents with the State Bureau of Investigation spotted a stolen truck in a parking lot near 1800 S. State, with Riding still inside, according to a police booking affidavit. The agents, who were driving unmarked patrol cars, turned on their emergency red and blue lights and attempted to arrest Riding.
One agent exited his vehicle with his gun drawn and ordered Riding out of his truck, the affidavit states. Instead, Riding "put the truck in drive and accelerated, hit the passenger front of my patrol vehicle and pushed it 3 to 4 feet into my legs," the agent wrote in the affidavit.
The truck's rear tires continued to spin as Riding attempted to turn toward State Street. A second unmarked patrol car then entered the parking lot.
"Riding continued to accelerate the full-size truck, hit the front of the second police vehicle, pushed the vehicle approximately 15 feet back into State Street and drove the front of the truck onto the engine of the patrol car. Riding was continuing to accelerate, trying to drive over the patrol car with the agent still inside it," according to the affidavit.
The first agent ran up to the truck, opened the door, placed his gun "to Riding's body" and ordered him to stop, the affidavit states. At that point, Riding surrendered.
After he was arrested, Riding allegedly said he "believed if he pushed my patrol car out of the way he could flee without being caught," the affidavit states.
Police say Riding is being investigated in at least three other cases and "has multiple pending felony cases in the last five months with charges similar to the current incident."
